From the iPod #35 - "Dark of Days"

Bourbon Princess was a Boston-based band led by vocalist/bassist Monique Ortiz.
The band had a very Morphine-like sound, to the point that Morphine's Dana Colley (saxophone) and drummer Jerome Deupree were part of the band on their first album, Black Feathered Wings. It was a sound Ortiz pursued on the second album Dark of Days.
Except for the title track, that is. "Dark of Days" eschews the sax for a lush string section that sounds unlike anything Morphine ever did.
And while Bourbon Princess is no more, apparently the odd song will make the set list when her new band, Alien Knife Fight, plays live, although I'm guessing "Dark of Days" would be hard to duplicate.
Still, the song is the best track on what is a really good album. It's a shame it will always languish in obscurity.
Some kind of lagoon, where pharos and modern-day dictators meet in a room, discussing their finer parts, and all their future sins. "Let the new day begin!" ...

In her case, she moved to Austin, Texas for the live music scene, which I've heard is one of the best anywhere.

@teamfreak16 It has been years since I've been to a small venue for a live band. In my case it was a pub!

@Ronrybs - I love the smaller, more intimate shows. A pub would be ideal.

I much prefer this style better. Not polished and all cleaned up. Well, not as much anyway. It is a bit hard at first, but you grow in that real quick. Anyone who is patient and listens. The violin is awesome.

I love her vocals, kind of Nina Simone like. Those strings definitely are a change, for sure.

You are a far superior music aficionado than I. Another group I never heard of.

Oh, I only found them while doing some research on Morphine a few years back. Glad I found them, though.
