My Mom, Waiting for a Friend and a Harbinger of Spring

My Mother grew up on a dairy farm in south central New York State . The Susquehanna River flowed by and was the south border of my Grandfather's farm.
One of mom's favorite signs of spring was the Red-winged Blackbird. She would get so excited to see one of these beautiful birds in spring because to her it meant within in a couple of weeks it was going to be warm, almost hot most of the time, as I've discovered over the years.
I will admit I've caught my mother's excitement or that beautiful Blackbird too. It is a “Harbinger of Spring” for me too.
The red-winged blackbird loves marshy wet lands. The male is the beauty with red and yellow stripes on his black wings. He's hard to miss. The female is “plain Jane”, a small brown bird, who no one remembers...poor thing.
I'm sick of winter, and the bird in the photo above made me happy yesterday.
I was sitting in my car waiting for a friend who met me in a parking lot in Port Dalhousie. Port Dalhousie is a fabulous tourist area in the summer, on the shore of Lake Ontario with the Welland Canal running through it. It is famous for its marinas.
Port Dalhousie is empty in the winter, except for locals who feed the birds. Every day there are piles of bird seed all around the huge parking lot and lots of people feeding them by hand too. Gulls, Canada Geese, ducks and smaller birds flock there to be fed.
I hope to be able to feel the heat in a couple of weeks. That ice and snow we got the other day is still here and being at the Port yesterday was COLD.
I shot a photo of the red winged blackbird yesterday from my car. When I got the photos on the computer I was amazed what else I caught. Check out the sparrow in the bottom photo spreading his wings (hovering) and starting to fly away from my camera.
I love surprises like those...

:D what great shots! i'm particularly fond'f that wee sparrow'n flight. i'm sure if'n ya'd planned such it would'a come out all blurred. 'least that's how it'd been if'n i'd been doin' the snappin'.
i'm anxiously awaitin' the return 'f the hummers here. fer these parts, e'en that's no true promise that a cold front won't hit with a vengeance, but usually a good sign anyhow.
big hugs!!

@crazyhorseladycx So raccoons are something to be proud of? They leave us alone so if they want to have babies in our trees we don't mind and its entertainment.

You were lucky that you got something in there that you liked. I have to crop the photo sometimes to remove something that would spoil the picture. That sparrow is camera shy (lol)

I have seen the cardinals which for me are the harbingers of spring. I saw them in Florida and here in Connecticut. Maybe they followed me.

I had no idea they eat the bugs that eat mosquito's. When you are a bird and a bug its a uncomfortable world. I love them and their protective attitude to their mates and nest. I've been challenged by more than one red winged while I harvested pushy-willows when we lived in a rental house with land and I sold the pushy-willows that grew by a creek. I made sure I never intentionally disturbed a nest. And by the way the word about the fuzzey bloom from that bush is not allowed on myLot... Who knew?

@PainsOnSlate LOL seriously that is funny that the name of a plant is blocked. It took me a minute to notice it was not spelled correctly I read it as the way it would be normally written.

@clai101 These would have flown away but I was sitting in my car and took the photo with my zoom. Because I used my zoom they look close to me but in fact there were about 30 feet away and I stayed in the car, just opened the window to get the photo.

@PainsOnSlate That's so nice because I've never had an encounter with such birds, Birds here in my country fly away when you get close to them.

I love going to Port, its so relaxing and such a nice place to set up a tabletop barbeque and enjoy a bite to eat out on the beach. I read a few years ago that a few of the businesses were going to close, so I am surprised to hear that it hasn't become a place of the past.

The corporation had made a ghost town out of Port, they tore down some of the historical building and gutted most of the others. The highrise has not even been started. I'm thinking it won't so some of the stores are opening again and you can still come to Port, the Beach and the picnic area (the park) will be there forever. The Merry-go-round will be there forever too. My friend will be opening a candy and treats store in a couple of weeks and my slate will be sold there. In the olden days my friend and I had a tea room (her) and a art gallery (me) upstairs in one of the old buildings. We were there for about three years but winter killed us - no traffic, so we gave up...

@PainsOnSlate I have such fond memories of going out there. When our son was at Brock, we would stay in a hotel room, student housing wasn't "our" thing. And we would always bring a cooler and a barbeque, because as the weather turned mild, barbequed food was what he missed the most about living up there as a student. And after his graduation ceremony we went to a steak and seafood house for a nice supper, it was small and very intimate, we had such a wonderful time there together.

What a good idea. I put out hummingbird feeders in the summer and we enjoy them. We get a lot of birds and I love the sound in the morning when they sing so beautifully.

I really liked the picture with the bird just taking off too. Around here I get excited to see the robins come back. It always seems like spring is around the corner once they show up. I've seen a few, so hopefully that means warmer weather is on its way here, and to you too.

We don't see a lot of red-winged blackbirds around here, but I remember growing up in Minnesota. They would arrive about the same time as the robins. It was the robins my mother looked for.
I absolutely love the picture. The red-winged blackbirds are beautiful.

Thank you they are beautiful, I actually saw a robin shivering in the snow, they had just started to show up before the dump was done on the weekend. I felt sorry for them, the snow covers the ground where they look for food. So It looks like the Robin and the red-winged showed up at the same time here this winter... I took down my berry wreath I make for winter on the front porch and left it on the ground for the Robin. I hope he ate the berries, I've seen sparrows eat them but I didn't notice if the robin ate them too.

We've been watching the red winged black birds for weeks already.
The surprise picture. Last January my daughter took a photo of a bald eagle in a tree in Oregon. When she looked at the phot on her computer screen there was a second eagle on the next branch.
