DVD player won't work for me now

I went over to my old house yesterday and grabbed the old DVD player. Granted, I haven't used it in a few years, but I thought it would still work. And it might. I just have a problem. I got it all hooked up this morning. It turns on. Check. I press the button to open the tray and that works. Check. I put a DVD in and pressed the button to close the tray. Nothing. I pressed it again. Nothing. I shut it off and manually closed the tray. I turned it on again and it automatically opened the tray. I pressed the button to close the tray and nothing happens. *sigh* Does anyone know a fix for this? I'm trying not to have to buy a new DVD player if I don't have to. I really need my money for bills. lol Oh, well, I tried. -Claudia-

The first thing that enters my mind is to check that the reject button is not stuck.

@LadyDuck I find it difficult to attribute that to a DVD, unless the disk is warped.

Barry, I wonder if it's not the DVD, my player was good, but I had a DVD that caused a similar problem.

It's the same button to open and close the unit, but I'll unplug it and go over the whole thing and see if I can find anything that seems to be stuck. Thanks!

Heres a whole bunch of videos Claudia I know nothing about what the problem would be though. Good luck my friend, perhaps someone here will have the solution.

Well, it's not the end of the world. Thanks for the video. When I have a little extra time (I have to go out soon), I will unplug my unit and see if I can figure something out. If not, I'll bring it back to the house next week and trash it and just buy a new one. One of these days something will just work right! lol

It can be frustrating when they don't work. I wish I could help, but I don't have any suggestions. I hope you get it to work.

Thanks! I love to watch movies and if I can get this thing going, I'll have a weekend to get away and watch as many as I'd like! :)

I can be really persistent when it comes to things like this! I haven't been around long enough to work on it, but after today, I have 4 days where I don't have to go anywhere, so you can be sure I'm going to see if I can take it apart and clean it and get it working! :)

We have gone through a few DVD players, I don't think they make them very well. The makers want them to break so we have to buy a new one.

Yes, that's very true. And yet, there is a fighter inside of me who won't let go unless I really have to! lol

@CRK109 You sound like my hubby. He has to try to fix something before he gives it up.

Sometimes it may be a broken spring or a laser that causes problems like that maybe even a short somewhere. Good luck I hope you find a fix for it.

@Bunny28 Yes, that's true. I went on Walmart's website to price them and there are all kinds of prices. When I go into the store, I'll see what's available and try to figure out what's a good one! :)

I'm going to try to clean it and if that doesn't work, I'll just find a new one. On the chance that I figure out a way to get inside this thing, I will check out the springs! Thanks!

That might need a technician already.

Well, I won't pay a technician since it's cheaper today to just buy a new one. If I can't fix it myself, I'll go shopping. :)

Sorry, can't help you with this. But can't you play your DVD's on your computer?

Have you tried with another DVD? Sometimes it's not the player, but can be the DVD that is defective.

Thanks, Marilyn! I've gotten a lot of great ideas and now I just need a chunk of time to work on them and see if I can get it going. If it works, I will feel great about being hands on again! :)

Try cleaning first the internal parts of your DVD it would probably because of ages that you haven't use it. clean it by using some baby wipes and painting brush then see if there is still a problem.

I'm not sure I have the tools to take it apart, but I'll see what I can do. You're probably right that it needs a good cleaning. I will do my best, thanks so much!
