My fairy garden

Fairy garden

I decided to go ahead and make a simple fairy garden. I already had the pail and pot to put it in, but needed to have the pot cut down to size. Hubby cut the pot and after I sanded off the rough edges I was ready to plant. I picked up a cheap, unpainted birdhouse for about a buck and used some glass gems that I already had to make a path and "pond" in the fairy garden. I decided I wanted to try my hand at growing succulents, so that's what I used in this garden. The hardest part was finding the succulents to put in my garden. Most stores around here don't have much for live plants yet, so I had to resort to one of the local garden centers. I don't normally like to go there because they are significantly more expensive than the box retailers and home centers for plants. They do have a much larger variety of plants, so if I can't find them elsewhere, that's where I go. I was able to find many different succulents to choose from in the size I wanted and struggled to decide on which plants to choose. I ended up choosing six different plants and planted them that night. I still have a couple of decorations to make, but otherwise it's done. My kids all like the fairy garden, so I plan on making another one or so with them once the less expensive stores have plants to choose from. Assuming I can find inexpensive plants I may let each of them make one. Even Captain, my curious young cat (he's almost 1), seems to like the fairy garden. He's actually left it mostly alone. It was almost a whole day before he pulled a plant out and all he did was pull it up and drop it in the pot near where it came out. There's only a few teeth marks on the plant, otherwise it's completely fine. Hopefully he decided it didn't taste good and he'll leave it alone now.

It is just beautiful and I bet my girls would love to do something like that. I planted some hens & chickens under my porch last years to cover the bare areas. They are just now starting to go, I just love them.

@fawkes62 They may be called a fancier name, I have always known them as hens & chickens. We had them when I was a girl and that is what mom called them

I've never tried hens and chicks before but I've seen others plant them outside around here. I'd have to check if they are perennial around here or not.

I was wondering when you mentioned the cat if he /she would use it as a potty... I hope not. I think you did a great job and I love the look of it.

I haven't had issues with them doing that, but I've had other issues. Allie will lay in the larger pots if I have small plants or seeds and Captain will dig in any dirt and tries to eat most plants. I had to move it to a different location after he dug in it twice. Thankfully he isn't digging to use it as a potty, he just likes to dig in the dirt.

I think your grandkids would enjoy it. My kids really want to make one of their own but they have to wait. Many of the plants haven't been in stores around here yet, though they may have come in over the weekend.

That's a lovely little garden. I think succulents are a good choice. Hope you can find some cheap ones.

I'm hoping some of the other stores will have some options as they get more plants in for the spring and summer. I do plan on doing at least one that isn't succulents, but wouldn't mind another succulent one either.

Thank you, I got the general idea on Pinterest, but tried to use what I had at home. Other than the plants, the bird house is the only thing I paid for (and that was not even a dollar).
