Can negative stuff about a celebrity destroy their carreer?

I see it in the media on shows such as TMZ ,The Thirty Mile Zone, and the gossip show Wendy Williams. There are things that celebs get involved in that are so outrageous that I think sometimes they are trying to make them look so bad that they might even become less popular or fail in their career.
Words do carry weight, when the source is a nationally televised power force.
Do you remember that famous country singer, Glen Campbell? His alcoholism did nothing positive for his public reputation. But underlying health issues were revealed in the following article:
Glen Campbell's announcement that Alzheimer's disease would force him to stop touring has raised questions about whether the country music legend's well-known battles with drug and alcohol contributed to his condition.

Nothing is all just black and white. Although many of them are happy to get any kind of publicity if it boosts their stardom status. But there have to be times when public displays of bad behavior shown over and over and over on television can do some degree of real harm to some celebs.

@Mike197602 . I am thinking about that funny man who we all used to admire so much in the good old days, who hosted that show 'Kids say the darndest things' remember, Bill Cosby? His actions got the best of him. There were many who kept the truth from the media for fear of personal scandal but when the first one stood up and said they were a victim of his bad behavior, many many more followed suit.

In many cases that is true but with certain things that isn't the case, even when the case hasn't been proved.

Bad press it still press for them. I mean look at celebs like Kanye West, Charlie Sheen, the Kardashians and Lindsay Lohan. A lot of bad press, but it also keeps people talking about them. They might not be so liked, but that is what the media thrives off of. Sadly, most people don't care about Miss Goody 2 Shoes.

You have made a very valid point on this situation. I have to say I agree with this but then there are some of them who truly get ticked off when the only public side the media shows of them is a negative one. In this respect it can in my opinion be damaging to some of them.

@lookatdesktop This is true. It has caused many careers to go downhill. But most of them manage to come back up. Robert Downy Jr had a big bad rep back in his addiction days, but he's doing very well lately and I applaud him for that.

No. And I can prove that with one word: Madonna.
Or do you need two words? Miley Cyrus.

It can go either way. In the NFL, look at Johnny Football. The press covers every little thing he does, which adds a cautionary tale on to his status as a professional football quarterback.
Some celebrities, like Madonna for example, have benefited greatly from negative press. For celebrities like this, notoriety and bad attention is better than no attention at all.
It depends on the specific celebrity, as it is different with each one.
