Discussion, debate or argument?

What really is the difference between these three. They can well be integrated in one word, which I don't know is what . But yet for discussion sake lets take this debate and try not to argue much about it. SEE! although the same( not really) yet very much different.

discussion and debate are very near each other in terms of meaning but argument isn't really. Argument implies shouting etc or bad words or heat. Often I call an argument a heated debate

I wish my family had seen it that way. While growing up if I dared express a difference of opinion I was told I was argumentative, the idea was that I was to agree with what they thought and believed.

I'd say that a discussion doesn't necessarily involve anyone arguing a point, so it's a broader category. Argument can be reasoned and disciplined (in which case I'd classify it as debate.) But it can also get out of hand, and turn nasty (as often happens on the internet )
