30 years of experience in a given industry

When you put in the resume that you have 30 years of experience in a given job or a given industry, you are practically pricing yourself out of a job. Nobody wants to hire a job seeker with 30 years of experience in purchasing or accounting. They think that the more experience you have, the more stubborn you are. In some cases, the manager is a younger person with just a few years of working experience. She definitely does not want to have her views challenged by more experienced workers. It is hard to give orders when you know that your people are much more experienced than you. That is why it is not good to put in the total number of working experience in the resume. You should write the detail job scope for the last two or three jobs, and the rest of the working experience in brief.

I had a couple of months in the call center industry, and that was it. Despite of my trainings in the related field, I was never good with my english speaking skills. I'm just glad that we had this businesses, or i would struggle even today.

Fortunately you do not have to work for others. I think you will get bored and frustrated after a year or so. It is hard to find a job that you like, and can stay for many years.

If I have 30 years of experience of a particular job, maybe I won't apply for another one. If ever I apply, I would apply for higher position like supervisory or manager. Just my thoughts.

If you have 30 years of experience in a particular job, the risk is that the company will terminate your service. By then, your salary will be enough to hire 2 or 3 young people who have just graduated from the university.

@Macarrosel Seem like a good deal for both parties. Over here, many companies make use of economic downturn to get rid of experienced staff in their 40s or 50s. They will then hire young people at a third of the salary.

@scheng1 Yeah, that's why in our bank where I retired, the maximum number of years we are allowed to work is up to 30 years only or 55 years old which ever comes first. Then the bank will hire younger employees which they pay less. Seems a nice move for a company so that they can save more in their fix expenses.

So true! Nowadays though, we see an older workforce paid at half the salary that they deserve. I'm fortunate that I've been able to get substantial experience across a wide range of industries and the skills I've learned can be used in more than one industry.

You are very wise to have experience in different industries. This keeps you employable. The worst is those who work in the same job with the same company for 30 years. Once they are made jobless, no way can they find another job even at half the pay.

This is great advice! Two years ago I joined a company which was a totally different industry from which I came from. The previous jobs I had was in the manufacturing industry where I had almost 20 years of experience. I did not highlight this in the interview because the hiring manager was just about my age.

Fortunately you are wise enough to keep your mouth shut. Many people just cannot resist shut their mouth about their working experience. They forget that they are looking for a job in a different company. Even if it is in the same industry, they have to know that they are the newcomer, and they have to respect the knowledge and experience of those who have worked there longer than them.

I agree. The longer experience you have, the lesser the chance of getting hired since they don't want employees who knows how it really goes.

True. The young manager does not want someone who reports to him, and yet has more experience than him. The company does not want to pay the older worker so much money for his 30 years of working experience.

Even if those who apply for the jobs are over-qualified, they have to learn to shut their mouths when they are attending interviews. Younger people hate to hear old people talking about their experience.
