My children found a grasshopper in the bedroom!

Small grasshopper

My children were very excited this morning, and told us they found an insect in the bedroom. They went upstairs with a plastic bag, and caught the insect. It's a small grasshopper! They are keeping the grasshopper in a plastic container, and they are busy playing or observing it. I need to go and find out what we need to feed it except giving it some grass. I wonder how this grasshopper hopped into our bedroom and when it will successfully escape. Have you caught any insects or small animals and kept it? Picture: This is the small grasshopper my son caught.

I have been thinking if I should let them keep the insects they caught, but I decided to let them keep and observe. I understand it might not be good to the insects or small animals. But sometimes, I wish the insects can escape from them after some time. At least, they have learned something while observing the insects or animals. I never did this when I was young, I was afraid of any kind of animals or bugs. Because of my children, I just have to be a bit more brave now. June Bugs sound interesting, I do not know what they are, will check it out soon.

i can imagine your kids excitement. my nephew is afraid of lizard but gets excited at the same time whenever he sees one. he was like a dog who cant wait to come out when we captured one before when i was young, i used to catch them together with my cousins but we dont put it in a container though. i hope you find something for that insect to eat.

@MGjhaud Yes, it's fun to watch them. I was actually afraid of all these insects and animals, but it seems like I am getting more used to it when I am with my children.

It's so much fun to see the kids catching and taking care of the small animals or insects. I have never done this when I was young.

Wow, that sure is an unexpected lesson on science. I think you can get your children to try to feed different things, and observe the food that the grasshoppers like.

Yes, that's why I think it's always good for the children to play in the nature, they will have lots of chances to have science lessons without even realizing it.

@scheng1 Glad that my children are not that adventurous too, they are quite cautious. They'd ask us first before touching or catching any creatures. Perhaps I have warned them before.

@kaka135 The risk is that many creatures are poisonous, and the kids may suffer. It is rather risky to let the children go to nature unless one adult can keep track of one kid all the time.

When I was a kid, pre-school and elementary days, I loved catching grasshoppers and feeding them. I would cut a blade of grass and then placed it near the mouth of the hopper and enjoyed watching it munching the grass. Oh, and I would catch dragonflies too and did the same.

I didn't know dragonflies eat the grass like that as well. Thanks for telling me. I am sure my children will love to feed the animals or insects. I have never do this when I was young.

@toniganzon That's really good. Yes, I think it's always good for children to live in the country, or get near to the nature. I was a city girl and I spent most of my time staying at home.

No, I usually let it go outside, far, far away from any entrances!

I don't like or don't dare to catch them as well, I usually just let them be there (if not harmful or disturbing), or now I can also ask my children to help.

@Jeanniemaries Yes, that's even worse!! Glad that now even though my husband is not around, I can ask my children to help me get rid of those disturbing creatures for me. They might not catch it, but they will chase it away.

@kaka135 I'm the catcher now for everything. I have to catch it and remove it or I can't sleep. I picture it walking across my face as I sleep and it spurs me on.

I never kept any insects that come into my house but I we stuff all the time. We have gotten grasshoppers, crickets are really common here too. And there have been many moths I love catching moths, water bettles, stick bugs, and also a a few times there has been praying mantis in my house and we always get daddy long legs. And there has been an earwig or too and other little bugs. I kind of enjoy the bugs because they are harmless. But it is really common to get cockroaches. I hate cockroaches.

@kaka135 Oh there are LOADS of cockroaches in America. It is filthy. Some streets you just see them scattered around trying to see which how to take over next. It is disgusting!

My husband is very good at catching the insects. Such as last summer it was easy for him to catch the cicadas. You know the cicadas were in high trees. I couldn't even see whether they were except for hearing their sounds. But my husband not only could see them, but also catch them. It made us so excited. So catching something like grasshoppers is a piece of cake for him When my husband was not away and I wanted to go to have a good time with my son. One day I found it might be interesting for us to go fishing the shrimps in some pools (some people open these places for people to have some fun in the city). But my son said let's wait for another day when dad was available because he thought dad was good at getting a lot of shrimps

So, have you all went for fishing the shrimps? It's so nice of you to bring your son go fishing, we have not done that before. We have those places in the city as well, but I'd prefer to go to the pond and fish. We can still find those ponds here, but may not be able to catch any fish. I don't really like the cicadas. There was once it stuck on my hair, and difficult to get rid of it. I basically do not dare to touch any insects or animals, but glad that my husband and children like to. So, it's always their job to get rid of any disturbing creatures for me.

@youless I think sometimes boys would prefer to do certain things with the dad. I can see my son is growing to that too, though he always loves to be with me, now he started to like doing things with his dad more. Well, I am not good at playing any sports or chess, my husband is much better. I am very happy with that actually.

@kaka135 Since at that time my husband was not here, so my son and I didn't go for fishing the shrimps because my son thought I was not good at it. In fact I was also worried whether we could fish something without my husband

Did you have a window open perhaps and that is how the grasshopper got into your bedroom? They wouldn't bother me if they don't make any noise. We get crickets in our cellar sometimes and it drives me nuts. I cannot stand the noise they make in the house especially if I am trying to sleep.

Yes, I guess the window is open, though not widely. I don't like the sounds crickets make as well, they are really noisy. But, my children are excited when they heard the sound.

Your kids are like my two grandnephews, they love to catch insects and play with them. But I don't want them to catch dragonflies because they eventually die and I feel sad for them.

Yes, that's why I always told them to be gentle with the insects or small animals. My children don't usually "play with" them, but mostly keep them inside the container and observe. I think we have not caught dragonflies before. Since dragonflies always stay there without moving, we can just watch them without catching them.

Yes, we made holes on the container, so the grasshopper can breathe. The insects usually get to escape after some time, so I haven't see them die in the container before.
