Can Mylotting help improve your English?

I've had the pleasure of having discussions with native English speakers, and I have learned a lot from them without them even knowing it. I usually observe how they reply, the common idiomatic expressions they use, how they react to different topics. So to answer my own question, yes, I think Mylotting can help improve the English of non-native English speakers. I even recommended Mylotting to a friend who had to take an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam because it helps a person improve his/her writing as well as reading comprehension.

This really would depend on your current level of English. Despite English being our native tongure, there are still a great number of people who have poor grammar and spelling, which will naturally apply to all societies.

It is true. There are also times that I get confuse with our own grammar in our own mother tongue. I think it also applies even to some native English speakers.

@Angel_15 By that I assume that you are referring to the general usage and terminology often applied.

There is a grammar issue even for native speakers. But I've studied grammar rules, so I'm not easily misled. I find Mylot is most useful for practicing how to talk to others in English.

Writing for sites like myLot can improve English, but we must be careful not to learn misspelled words and take for granted that English speaking people always have a perfect grammar.

If the word is misspelled, it might bring a difficulty to understand the whole meaning of the sentence. There are also words that are pronouce the same but different in spelling and sometimes if people are careless they might write the other word when what they really mean is the another.

I agree that we should not take for granted that native English speakers have perfect grammar. I guess this is where the English "level" that Koalemos mentioned above comes into play. Mylot will only be helpful to you if you already have a good background in English.

@annierose I've noticed that Mylot has a spell-check feature. I find it very helpful.

I personally think it would help. It is amazing how much you learn by hanging around people with other types of knowledge. My primary language is English, but over the years I have spent 2-3 weeks at a time for work in Spain. If you are going to a place just for fun, you may pickup a few words, but I spend the weeks with my co-workers and it forces me to interact in Spanish. I have no Spanish language background, but I figure if I am in a country that speaks Spanish, I should at least try to learn it while I am there. Yes, it does help that most of my co-workers speak English/Spanish and they can help with translations.

Someone suggested that if a person really wants to learn a language, he must immersed himself to the country where that language was being used by the citizen. I also dream of staying even for few months in Spanish area countries to learn more about that language.

It's a big help to have discussions with people who are native speakers of the language you are trying to learn as the language comes naturally to them.

Yes I have heard this many many times over the years here at mylot that people are coming here writing and helping improve their English. They usually do an amazing job. Honestly I feel other countries are taught English more thoroughly then Americans are taught other languages. The writing from foreign people on mylot is really good. Unless they told me I usually would have no idea that English is not their native tongue. This is the same with your writing here it is great you are doing a really good job!

I agree. If a person is not a native English speaker, it does not mean that he does not have a good command of the English language. I have friends from Singapore and Indonesia who have a considerable excellent English communication and writing skills.

Thank you! I try to do my best. We here in the Philippines learn English at a very young age and never stop learning it even after we graduate from college, and that helped me a lot.

I only can use one language and I'm still learning. One of the guidelines suggests not using "text chat" which is better for what you are looking at. Understand what I mean? Please always say if you don't understand. I don't understand myself sometimes.

@Angel_15 I notice most people also watch there capitals and periods, those kinds of things. It is something I am weak in and often we become lazy. i will do things like this. The more we are exposed to good writing the better. We will become better without thinking too much and doing it in a comfortable way also helps I find.

@Bluedoll I'm one of those people who try to observe correct capitalization, punctuation, etc. It's because I don't want to get used to poor writing.

Fortunately, I do understand you. It's good that "text chat" isn't allowed here. That can be confusing for everyone, especially non-native speakers.

it has improved my typing skills at the keyboard but it hasn't really made any difference in fact my english speaking skills has deteriorated over the years of not speaking it.

As we type, we unconsciously memorize the place where the individual letters are placed in our keyboard or keypad. I have been using computers many years and my typing speed increases compared with the previous years. I think your good in English is now returning back as mylot gives you a chance to hone it as you participate in here. Happy mylotting!

Of course in Mylot there's no way to practice speaking in English, so you'll have to do something else to practice it.

We can learn faster numerous vocabularies once we apply them. That is learning by doing and we do it by responding.
