When I was a young girl I had a summer job on a farm, and sadly the farm manager died of cancer - he was only about 40. I didn't know him that well , but went to his funeral along with the other workers. We were sitting in the church waiting for the funeral to begin, when the dead man walked past us and sat in the front pew!! It turned out that he was the dead man's identical twin brother. It gave me a real shock, I can tell you. Have you had any startling experiences with a 'doppelganger'? I was going to entitle this 'Dead Ringer' but @Marcyaz beat me to it with her post about someone looking exactly like her brother. Has anybody ever 'stolen' your title?

First I had to check the meaning of "doppelganger". Now I know. Second, there was a photo of a woman published in a newspaper once and my little 1 year old son pointed at it and said "Look Mama".

@desertdawg Now I was born and raised in the US, so my opinion is still very much "American" but I wanted to weigh in on "learnt" vs "learned" and I hope you don't mind? In school, we were taught "learned" "I learned how to tie my shoes." However, at home "learnt" was used more, and I can't really say why. Im a "Southerner".

@jaboUK Just as a total aside... as to the word "learnt" is that a British usage? I had a friend here across the pond who used it all the time and told me it was an ole cowboy saying. I could look it up but I much rather hear thoughts from real people here.

That must have been a real shocker. I have none in my life but was reading a trivia type article about the making of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which is one of my favorite TV shows. It said that they had to use the actor who played Xander's twin brother for a couple of episodes because he was either not available or couldn't do all the scenes. I want to go back now and watch those two episodes and see if I can tell a difference.

I didn't know that the actor that played Xander had a twin until after the show had stopped being made. I also did not know that he had to step in for a few episodes. I wonder how that worked out being paid. Did the checks not go to his brother then? You know Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen did that on Full House.

@celticeagle That must have been convenient for the makers of that programme to have a 'double' available.

@crazyhorseladycx I thought the calves illustrated the post well as they look so alike. So you had not one, but two doppelgangers? How could your town possibly cope?? Regarding the title - if I hadn't noticed the other post it would have been me that could have been accused of stealing

Yeah that would have freaked me out a little had I not known he had an identical twin. Years ago I went to Maine with my dil to bring her 2 oldest children to visit their father. His girlfriend swore she knew me from somewhere. She asked if I worked in a dentist office. It later occurred to me that my sister, who looked just like me, but taller, worked in a dentist office. So there ya go.

@jaboUK yes it is indeed. I have identical twin sons. One is neat as a pin. Clean cut, dresses well, keeps his hair well groomed. His brother has long hair and is a hippie type. My clean cut son went to Walmart and at the register the cashier said "wow you look great with that new haircut, you clean up good!" My son said, yeah well thank you but you must think I am my brother. LOL.

So which one should I answer? Lol. Yeah I had a doppelganger experience before but I didn't see the entity, just heard it. I heard my mom call me when I was at home. When I went to her room, she was not there. Turned out she was at our neighbor's. Stolen my title? Lol do I own my titles? I don't even know hahaha. Though I'm fine with sharing titles.

@jaboUK and you were about to post your discussion right after the other user posted with the title that you wanted? that's a weird coincidence actually. of all the possible titles, except of course the usual "good morning," why were you thinking of the same title?

@yalul070 I think to be a real doppelganger you have to see it, but I could be wrong. The titles thing was just a light-hearted observation. The doubling up of titles is bound to happen - for instance how many posts are there entitled 'Good morning'? I was just lucky to notice the other post with the title I wanted, and was so able to change mine. But if I hadn't, though it may have seemed that I was stealing or copying it, it would have just been a coincidence.

I've met a few twins in my life, but I recall two girls I met in first grade who looked alike, but I don't remember them being related... As far as I know that was my first encounter with a doppleganger, long before I know what it was. Or even before I learned that the Spiderman villain "Doppleganger's" name was German for "double..."

@jaboUK Yeah it was kinda weird, as I remember vaguely that I met the doppleganger while making my way to the playground. She was being chased by the girl I mistook her for.And again, I was seven years old, and had no clue what I saw. Heck before learning what a doppleganger was, I didn't think twice about it.
