Shall we dance?

Studies have showed that exercise helps us to stay young and strong but scientists at Magdeberg University in Germany wanted to know what type of exercise would be best. Two groups of 20 pensioners embarked on a 6 month trial, one going to a dance class for 3 hours a week, the other set going to a gym for the same time. The dancers improved much more than the gym bunnies and they liked the class so much that they insisted on carrying on when the study was over! Dancing , it seems is more holistic and comprehensive, working more muscle systems . It also involves more input from nerves which has the effect of strengthening the muscle fibres which are attached to the nerves. So if you want to stay fit and strong, get out your dancing shoes! Good idea? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b076zf93/how-to-stay-young-episode-1

It is also (I think) one of the few activities that can actually increase bone density which is a great bonus for older people.

@Auntylou Anything weight-bearing is good I think but running and jogging can be hard on knees and ankles whereas dancing is less so.

@JudyEv This is true, because I can still dance but with my grotty ankles I can't walk for long

I think that running would be good for the bones too, but I won't be doing that, whereas dancing...

I can understand why it worked, my hubs and I however took a dance class and he has two left feet and no rhythm, it was a big fail for us lol

I wonder if there's also a bit of a social component to it, since a lot of people who go to the gym seem to work out alone rather than with another person. Seems like a great option, and yet another reason I should quit dragging my feet and get my kid enrolled in classes.

Yes, they said that the social aspect was important ! And the fact that dancing unlike repetitive exercise, involved the brain as well as the many different muscles and also helped with balance ,which is a major factor in falls in old age.

@Auntylou Ha, you caught me not reading the article... guess that'll teach me to weigh in on these things when I'm at work.

You are right,@yukimori, because in the video which unfortunately you won't be able to see, the old people on the exercise machines were not interacting with each other, though they were in a big group, while the dancers were clearly having fun

I think it is a personal choice, people do what they like best to do. Do not like to be told what to do.

It's a good idea. Gets your heart rate up and uses lots of different muscles = good workout.

@Auntylou - I used to, a lot, mostly to pick up girls. I really don't anymore, though.

I guess I have two left feet so I just go for walking hahaha! I see many ladies though enjoying the zumba early in the morning at the boulevard where I pass by after my 10-round walk at the ovals.

I think that I might find zumba a bit strenuous but the oldies class on the video was quite relaxed and you didn't have to be perfect!

That sounds good! If I'd to choose, I'd prefer to go dancing class rather than going to the gym. Dancing seems more relaxing and fun, and there's interaction with others as well. I think when we are happy, it'll be better for our health too.

I enjoy dancing so much. I guess that's why I can maintain my figure without dieting or doing the usual workouts.

You are doing just the right thing to keep a healthy weight. Apparently, it is even more important to exercise after your 30s which is when, unless well used, muscles start to shrink.

I surely prefer to dance than to gym. I also like to walk and this is something that I do every day.

It does sound a good idea, and I quite see how dancing would be much more enjoyable than going to the gym.

That makes sense. I've tried the gym but I get so bored that I end up dropping out. I found that walking with a friend works best for me.

Yes @BettyB I can imagine that going to the gym is quite boring. Walking is great too, but doesn't work all the muscles. You look quite young still, but they say that our muscles will wither if not used regularly

ok, but I do have two left feet, but have lots of fun doing it. Any movement we can do is good for us that is for sure.

May I have this dance? I would much rather dance than work out in a gym. I do walk and cycle.
