Unexpected results

sweet potatoes

I started to neglect my garden since I was pregnant as I was really not feeling well during my first trimester. It's been really hot here as well, so almost all the plants died. I feel sorry for them, but I really didn't have energy to take care of them. I am thinking of digging out the dead plants, and plan to do the gardening again. I started with my sweet potato leaves. When I pulled out the leaves, I found a few sweet potatoes in the soil. That's really unexpected. Though I am not sure if they are edible or nice to eat, my children and I were excited for this surprise. Do you experience any unexpected results or outcome lately? Picture was taken by me: The unexpected sweet potatoes

a sweet potato is good when just boiled, then eaten with condensed milk. that is how we eat it. sugar is also good. but sweet potatoes can make us expel air from inside--- you know, flatus. it is good for pregnant women too.

I didn't know it's good for pregnant women. I just know it's nutritious. We usually just boil or steam them, or cook the sweet soup with them (Just cut into pieces, boil together with the water, and add some sugar into the sweet soup). I have never try eating with condensed milk before. That's something new to me!

@ridingbet Thanks! The induce passage of stool does help me a lot now. I really need to eat a lot of fruits now to help me with that.

@kaka135 try to eat it solo, my friend, or dip it in refined sugar or with condensed milk. it is good for pregnant women because it increases your gastric motility and induces passage of stool.

Thanks for assuring that. I am going to cook it anyway, just to try it out, though I don't know if it'll be nice. Perhaps I will try to plant some sweet potatoes soon, as we like to eat sweet potatoes.

I had that surprise too. I was trying to clear the area where I had planted sweet potato and there I saw a sweet potato deep down in the soil. Gardening is full of surprises. Happy gardening.

I recently learned that sweet potato leaves are delicious, and are eaten by many Asian cultures. You cook them like any green, leaves and stems, washed well. You can also stir fry them in olive oil with garlic until soft. They can be used like spinach, and can be tossed into a salad. I just planted some for this reason, but have not tried them yet. They are reported to be delicious, and there are several YouTube clips on how to cook them.

Yes, as Chinese, I have been eating sweet potato leaves since I was young. It's really very easy to cook. But I haven't try to put them into a salad. That sounds good!

I know you are busy and you don't have more time to take care of your garden. Have you considered to plant the cactus? As you don't have to spend long time looking after it. It is even fine that you don't water it often. It can still grow well

You have to "cure" them before eating, else the sweet potatoes will not be sweet. That means to put them in a dry place away from the sun for the skin to dry out. It takes about a month or two to "cure" it, and you will enjoy sweetness when you cook it.

I unfortunately don't have a green thumb. It would be a surprise if I would ever harvest a thing from the earth.

Yeah, when my sansavieria or snake plants started growing. I was expecting them to die since i had no clue when is the exact day to water them. Until that one day when some of them are in fact growing. I'm looking forward for growing new moringa leaves and pods in the future.

This is something that always happens to me when I clean the garden at the end of the winter. As soon as I start to dig the ground I find plenty of potatoes. I suppose they stay dormant in winter.

No unexpected results for me lately. As I see it, those sweet potatoes are still edible for human consumption.
