Minimum Wage

April 11, 2016 6:31pm CST
So as of 2016, minimum wage for California is up to $10 an hour. But in other states, such as I believe Washington (correct me if I'm wrong), is up to $15 an hour. People argue that if we move up our minimum wage it'll be even more difficult for us to continue our daily lives because of such a change. But if other states can handle it, why can't we? What are your thoughts on this? Should California move their minimum wage up too?

California has an astronomically high cost of living, so it makes sense that wages need to be higher there, including minimum wage. But go to states like Mississippi or Alabama where the cost of living is really low, and it wouldn't make any sense whatsoever to raise minimum wage to $15.

@moffittjc I am from California. So I meant I wish it wasn't so high costly to live here.

I feel like it wpuld bring the standard of living up. Its also a sad day for those of us who have worked our way up the totem pole into making $15 an hour. But I agree that $10 an hour is just not enough to live off. Quite the dillemma.

In the long run, I don't think that raising the minimum wage is going to help. The cost of everything else will increase right along with the minimum wage increases and as John said, automation will replace workers.

Yeah that is true.

The governor signed the minimum wage increase in California but it will not automatically go to $15 but in increments during the course of the next few years. The result will be fewer jobs no matter how people dispute that. Fast food places are moving to automated orders eliminating the human order takers. More automation will replace workers.

Well thank you for your response. Now I know a bit more on the situation.

The problem with raising the minimum wage is that often employers will cut work hours. Often employees who receive benefits to supplement their wages, will also see those clawed back if the wage goes up. This can result in low-income earners actually making less money than before the wage went up. I applaud states that are trying to make a difference for working class citizens, but it doesn't always work out the way we expect it to. I hope any state that makes this kind of change, will ensure the increase actually gets to the folks who need it most.
