First Vehicle

April 12, 2016 12:42am CST
This morning driving to doctor's appointments my girls and I are discussing what vehicle they want to "inherit". To my surprise they are argue over who gets the mini-van vs who gets the Lexus. For humors sake I have to throw in that my three year old son then chimes in from the backseat that he wants a blue and pink "boy" truck with ice cream comes on it. I am a firm believer in teaching my children that they need to work for what they get, including their first vehicle. I am thinking they need to pay for at least half of the vehicle and have a part time job to pay for the insurance on it. What do you think? Are there other ways to let them "earn" a vehicle? I prefer my children not become one of the Entitlement Generation.

I never got my son a car. He earned every penny for whatever he needed.

You're doing the right thing. These days it's easy to get a car as long as one gotta job.

probably give them the vehicles you have now. it will be old by the time theyre eligible for a car and you might want to have your own new cars by then.

It's better to tell them early that they should work hard if they want to get something. Though in my case, I got my first and only card as a graduation gift from my Mom. I am lucky enough but it didn't teach me how to become hardworking.

My son already has his eyes on the 2007 Pontiac G6 that I currently drive. I figure that by the time he's driving, I would be wanting to replace it anyway. So, I will be fine that he "inherits" it. But for the insurance, he definitely has to pay for himself.
