I have a huge patch of ferns in one of my front flower gardens. It gets so big it covers the sidewalk. I don't like when my flowers and plants spill over onto my sidewalk except this one. I love the look of ferns. So I let them go where they will. I am not a huge fan of day lilies so when they do that I cut them back. It sure won't hurt them I have never seen a flower spread like a day lily. They will take over everything given the chance.
Today I'm going over to my nephews house along with my son to split some wood. My nephew has a huge log splitter so the plan is for me to run the splitter and my son and nephew to do the heavy lifting. My nephew really needs the help. He is going to school part time to get his RN licence and he also works very close to full time at a mechanics job. He has done the mechanics thing for a long time and is sick to death of the whole thing. So I help him when I can.

Most of my photos were taken in past years. I have 10,000 plus photos on my computer. But the ferns are just now starting to come up. Yea cool to see them unroll.

Day lilies will take over everything if you let them. Your gardens and your lawn. We chop them down all the time and yet every year we have more.

When my Dad was still alive we split wood for a couple of weekends, it was like a party, dozens of people showed up to help. I miss it now, I'm sure my sister does too, she buys her wood now...Its fun and I know you enjoy it or you wouldn't be there. Its nice for you to help out a friend. Love the fern and look forward to see photos of summer flowers.

@fishtiger58 My brother has an underground home, its lovely and could be in a magazine, all windows and light. He heated the home with wood for years but in his old age had a gas furnace added. Made life easier as he aged.

My nephew is so busy with life that he can use all the help he can get. We split wood until we had a pile taller than me. He was so happy and we aren't done yet. He had to quit to study for a test. So we will go back another day and help again. I plan on helping him with this whole wood thing for the entire spring, summer and fall so that he has enough wood for the winter.

@PainsOnSlate It's not easy to heat with wood. It's lots of hard work, I can understand why he switched in his old age.

No and they are in great demand. They can do lifting and such that is hard for female nurses.

So the ferns are nice but the day lilies are very aggressive?

Yes daylilies spread like wildfire and the foliage always gets out of control in my opinion. You can pull day lilies out of the ground for years and years before you actually get them all out. I don't much care for them.

Oh that is sweet of you to help your nephew. I don't have much walking space, so if a plant starts growing over my sidewalk, I either transplant it or remove it, depending on what the plant is.

Good luck with the wood splitting. All my kids burn wood so there is a lot of splitting going on around here all the time.

We used to help him split with axes, thankfully he now has a monster log splitter which makes the job much easier and way faster.

Hanging ferns are a very southern thing - you see a lot of them down here. This house needs color or I would use hanging ferns instead of flowers in hanging baskets.

lovely pic'f that fern unfurlin'. wish they'd grow here like that...reckon that requires reliable moisture 'n non arid winds, lol. i've a few boston ferns i haul in/out each year. i'd love to find a fern ('r 5) that'd cater to these parts. they'd be perfect 'round the pond 'n shaded by the big pine.
glad yer able to help that youngster out 'n kudo's to him fer workin' so hard to achieve his dream :)

I'm not even sure what kind of fern this is. It was here when we bought this house. My nephew has always been a hard worker and provides for his family, but now with school he can't work as much and so they are hurting for money. Thankfully my sister his mom can help with grocerys and such, but putting in a wood burning stove for his winter heat will save him tons of money as long as he gets enough wood. I aim to make that happen, my nephew is my heart.
