I figured as a newbie to this site. I'd work a bit on deep philosophical thoughts (at least for the next week or so). I as a writer need a new drive and a new push so I figured, why not have people behind me. Today's question Is it more important to be liked or respected? As much as I'd welcome to be liked, people can still like you and disrespect you. It's the way things work. I would want to be respected. Things get done quicker and more efficiently if people respected you. Sure sure, I go back to being liked, but even though I'm not liked (or whatever) I am not being spit upon and being called a milky-eyed cur.

I also think it's more important to be respected. Respect is earned, and it has to do with the person's character. I don't support respect coming by fear though, I am thinking about the respect earned with the person's qualities and life achievements.

That was very well put. The best form of respect is when you don't try to command it but it is a reflection of what people see about you.

@desertdawg The kind of respect that comes from fear is forced in my opinion and doesn't last long. I think that the positive respect is correlated with admiration and it's a great feeling to respect someone because you admire them.

I would rather have respect but the problem with me is I am liked because I am kind and soft spoken. I am not respected by some because it's pretty easy to walk all over me. I am okay with who I am though, not really worried about my social status.

Great question! I also feel like there is a monumental difference. Like when I used to be a supervisor I know that people did not always like me (such is common in being the boss) but i hope they respected me. Welcome to MyLot by the way!

I think it's pretty common as a teenager to be liked rather than respected. I was just thinking about that when I thought things through, "Did I really I want to be respected as a teen?" It would be interesting to ask a group of teenagers this exact question.

To me it`s like me or hate me,just don't step on my feet .Still don't like me? then find a way to tolerate me because im not going anywhere because of you. But if i had to choose, I prefer to be respected than liked

How can you like somebody without respecting them? I don't see how that's even possible. Those two things should go hand in hand.

Being respected is one step from being liked as someone who is admired for his/her lifestyle and decision taking!

Respect is one thing I would always want to have anywhere. That's more important than being liked.

i respect my dad, a few more family members and friends. I can actually count them on my finger tips, on the other hand i actually cant count how many people i like int his world. i like few hollywood actors few singers... so definitely for me respect is bigger or rather more important that being liked. thank you for bringing up such a nice topic Jennifer.
