Salary and work behavior

When a company changes the salary and compensation structure, it will have a huge impact on the behavior of the workforce. Many salaried employees with no overtime payment are very lazy. They will push work away and they do not want to do more since they are getting paid the same amount every month. The only time they worked hard is the two months before their appraisal period. The salaried staff with overtime will slack during the normal working hours, so that they can stay back to do overtime. Those who are on hourly rate are different. They want more hours since more hours mean more pay.

That is why the saying goes, "if you love your work , you will never feel as working again". So that people will see as compensation as a reward and additional points.

Even if you love your work, you will still fight for the compensation. Take a look at the way the CEOs fight for their bonus and shares. They can fire 5000 persons, and yet they do not want to reduce their own bonus.

@zaga_cleuth Just accept that is the way that the world works. Nearly everyone works for money, even if they are very rich!

@scheng1 Aw! That's the sad part. Most people are after the money and humanity is at stake.

At work we get evaluated monthly, so there's no room for slackers. If you performed poorly one month, you get a warning, and if it doesn't improve the next month, you get your final warning. If you still don't hit the targets in the third consecutive month, then you're out. Employees are on an hourly rate. The good thing about this company is that the base pay remains the same regardless of the output. We have our peak and off peak periods. During the off-peak period you could spend half the day doing nothing and the pay remains the same. These people are not being lazy, there is just nothing to do. During peak months everyone is so busy they hardly have any time for chitchat. As a perk, people receive cash incentives for high workload. We have a regular nine-hour shift that includes a lunch hour. We cannot go overtime as we please. Overtime can be offered when there is a need. Some people take the offers but I usually don't.

Wow, this must be a very competitive and yet friendly work environment. You have to compete with everyone else, yet encourage all of your friends to hit the monthly target so that they can stay on in this job.

Sadly, I've been in a working environment such as this. It doesn't do the company any good, and it does not help morale of the employees. It would tale a lot to change the mentality or culture of this kind of working environment.

Once the compensation method changes, the whole work culture will change. In many Asia countries where factories jobs are in abundance, the salary is based on a mixture of daily rate plus an incentive for hitting the target. If you are in a garment making factory, and you can exceed your quota, you will get paid extra for the rest of the work done. That is why many fast and good workers are happy there.
