Little Flowers Make Big Strawberries.

Everyday I go look at my Strawberry patch. It's the only fruit we have caged, as the birds and squirrels like to eat them before we can. The rest of the fruit we have growing is plentiful so we don't mind sharing as much. Still no flowers on the strawberries but I expect them soon as our strawberries ripen at the beginning of June.
I took a shot of our strawberries last year, and they were wonderful. Can't wait until I am enjoying our own homegrown strawberries.

I don't think so. We plant them and water them. Some weeds grown and we pull them occasionally but it's not a huge deal. The rewards are great however and well worth any work we put into the patch, but truly it's not much.

No they don't last long enough around here and even though we have a lot it's still not enough to make it.

Strawberries do spread, a bit slower than say raspberries which spread pretty quickly. We have two varities of raspberries as well. Thanks so much glad you like my shot.

@fishtiger58 Here they call the strawberries "Magioster", because May is called Maggio in Italian.

@LadyDuck How interesting. I think they are called strawberries because many people but straw under the ripening berries to keep them out of the dirt.

lucky gal! the grasshoppers feasted 'pon mine. first eatin' the berries jest 'fore they were ready, then the flowers'n then the actual plants. 'course, they ate nearly e'erythin' 'round here'n 've done so the past 2 years. i'm hopin' the biological control i've put out'll keep'em from invadin' 'gain this year. i've noticed that some'f the strawberry plants're startin' to peek out from under their winter attire...so i'm hopeful to gimme 't least a few vine ripened berries this year.

@fishtiger58 dang the miles that separate's! i'd love to go wanderin' through yer berry patch'n 'd promise not to eat too many off'a the vine.
there's wheat fields 'round here 'n also weed fields - the latter'f which serves nicely's a nursery fer the nymph stage :( when they grow'p, they don't like those weeds'n come carryin' their suitcases'n kin. i'm so hopin' that biological schtuff works coz they e'en ate my rue to the ground, 'n its toxic to 'em. i reckon they figured 'twas worth 3 more days'f 'em livin'...

Ours are popping up too, we should have fruit in a month and a half. We get grasshoppers here too but not a lot. My town is surrounded by corn and chive fields I think they may be there instead of my yard, and I'm not complaining.

@fishtiger58 is it possible to grow strawberries in a pot on a deck or do they need space to grow? I don't have a yard to plant anything but I do have a deck which would work for potted flowers or plants

That's the beautiful thing about growing your own, you can be sure they are ripe before you pick them, unlike what we buy in the stores.

@Marilynda1225 Sure I don't see why not. I would make sure the pot has a wide opening as they do like to spread.

@fishtiger58 I agree. I miss it. I do buy them at the local farmer's market and grocery stores from time to time. Thanks. I might buy the seeds real soon. Any tips?

@KristenH I have never grown strawberries from seed. We buy established plants from our local garden center. We started with 5 plants and that's all we ever bought. They spread and every year we have more. I would say we have close to 100 plants these days. Just make sure they get some sun and water. That's pretty much all we do.

@fishtiger58 You're right about the animals though- we had planted a bush at our cottage and most of the time the fruit would get eaten if you didn't do anything about it.
