I woke up in the middle of an earthquake.

Last night I had some trouble falling asleep as my head ached.
I woke up, suddenly, while it was still dark, with the soil rocking.
It was not a small one, so I put on the only slippers I had around which were not to tranpple in the rain outside.
Fortunatly, it ended before I got wet. I got to bed again and went to sleep.
This morning I had a call from Leticia. She wasn´t coming. She had not been able to go back to sleep after the quake and to make matters worse, she had no light in her part of the city.
When I could get to the computer, I checked on the earthquake. It had been very near Santiago and 5.3 Richter in the city. Fortunatly, there were no damages to account.
What kind of problems does Mother Nature give you? I know that there is oen thing or another along the planet.

I just heard about a strong quake in Japan that happened last night. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are under threat of a large quake at any time.

Japan´s earthquake was bigger than ours . While ours was 5.6 and caused no damage, in Japan they had one over 6 Richter that collapsed some buildings.

@nanette64 I remember a day when I lived in southern California when there were at least ten quakes of 3.5 to 4.5 from morning to evening. It was alarming, but I never went through any major ones.

My house is very safe except if there is a catastrophe. My late husband made it earthquake proof.

@marguicha Are you sure that it was an earthquake and not just that you started snoring.

@Asylum I´m one of the few people my age who DO NOT snore . Check earthquake chile today. Most people would think that an earthquake over 5 Richter is a serious one.

Glad that it wasn't too bed! We rarely get earthquakes and when we do they are very small tremors that if one is asleep they will not even feel them. However, we do get some bad snowstorms, rainstorms, and windstorms at times..

I don´t like snow and we seldom have some here. That is because we are not prepared for snow while we are prepared for earthquakes.

Hi Anna!
How about storms in Switzerland? Are there any? You must be very lucky to be in a country which is considerably safe.

No damages at all. I would have been damaged though if I had gone out as I could not find proper shoes.

@annierose We have thunderstorms of course, but not hurricanes or tornadoes, it's a pretty safe country.

@JohnRoberts That part of the world, near the Pacific Ocean, is prone to quakes. Funny it was named "Pacific".

Mother nature usually gives me gives me enjoyment!
It is only when mother nature reacts to the pressures carried within that it spanks me hard in the butt!
The last time it occured to me, I was taking pictures with my new cannon camera and an earthquake occurred, I was in the middle of the street with my camera and a bottle of yogurt; the camera felt into the bottle and ended up useless.
I sold the camera for 1/10 the original price and eventually bought a new phone with camera.

Mexico has lots of quakes too. I remember the first time I went to Ciudad de Mexico with my husband and I could see the devastation caused by the big earthquake you had.

@quantum2020 Our country lies exactly where 2 plates collide. And to make matters worse, the Andes mountains, beautiful as they are, are young mountains full of volcanoes.

@marguicha I was not in Mexico at that time, but it was a strong earthquake! We are located at the edge of two continental colliding plates and also have some volcanoes that form part of the ring of fire.

I guess earthquakes are frequent in your area if you were able to go back to sleep. I'd have had a panic attack if I felt an earthquake in the middle of the night

Unfortunatly, we have the gold medal as earthquakes go. In many countries, an earthquake this magnitude would cause big troubles because of fear.

Wow, glad you are safe. Earthquakes are so scary. I used to live in California and have been in a couple of good ones. We get hurricanes and tornados here. I don't care for either one. Wind can be terrifying, especially when objects fly around.

Some people find that a 5 Richter quake is a big one. But I guess it depends on many things. There are buildings that are not prepared for quakes.

@marguicha No, there isn't. We live on higher ground, but my son has a house 1007 feet from the ocean. He watched the water come up his street and came to us with his kitties. Fortunately, his house was one of two that didn't have water damage. His house is on a slight incline.

I am happy you are OK we had an earthqake this spring, but I didn't even notice anything - in some places the houses were shaking, but no damage as far as I know.
But we can have very cold at times. -30C or even colder.. Brrr..

@marguicha Yes, we have central heating, and I rent my apartment. It is really warm here when things work, which they do, most of the time. The air is very dry, when it is cold, and becomes like electric and I have to hang up wet clothes - it is handy to do that after I have washed.. - sometimes I use a spray bottle with water.

I would not know what to do with that cold although I bet you have CH. Our coldest weather is 0C. I then want to stay in bed all day.

Wow, that is scary indeed, even if it was small. I have never woken up or been in an earthquake. We typically only have heavy snow, rain, and occasionally tornadoes, but not even that often. It's all very scary how powerful mother nature can be. Glad you are safe.

@maezee I haven't experienced an earthquake that lasted for more than 3 minutes yet. And I do not want to experience it anytime in the future. . I remember the last time there was an earthquake, I was already sleeping. My brother woke me up and when I woke up, I thought I was just dizzy.

@annierose Yeah! Theres an emergency siren that goes off. Also the sky turns a strange shade of yellow. You basically want to shelter in place in the basement in any room with no windows. What about you and the earthquakes?

It is so hot here, and some provinces have scarcity of water due to the El Nino phenomenon; scientists say due to global warming.
