When You Are Just About to Fall Asleep...

...do you ever jerk awake suddenly, feel like you´re falling and become wide awake again? Is this just due to muscle contraction or is it your soul leaving your body but you aren´t relaxed enough for it to happen? It happens to me maybe 3 times a week.

Interesting question! Do you dream at all in the moments before you "jerk awake"? What is the first thing you remember upon awakening?

Usually, odd as it might sound, that I dreamt of stepping off a kerb!! (spelt curb I think in US English) and falling further than the distance between the kerbside and the road. Once or twice I have woken and been physically unable to move my arm, my legs or my body. I am in perfect health and put this down to our brains doing things while we are sleeping, carrying on fuctioning, and us not understanding fully what´s going on and why. Or maybe I am just weird LOL :o)

This happens to me too, but not as often as that. Maybe once a month or so. It seems like it happens to my husband a couple of times a week. I have always wondered if there is more to this happening that just a muscle reaction.

Apnea happens... - Sleep Apnea
I think it could be a number of reasons, ones that you mentioned, but also Sleep Apnea as well. I suffer from it. It means I stop breathing when I sleep, so when my body gets starved for oxygen, it weill do something involuntary, to wake me up... scary huh?

This is a natural occurance, and actually has a "scientific" name, which I can't think of at the moment...Time for some googling!

This happens to me a lot and is something that I have never really given any thought to about WHY it happens. The idea of your soul leaving your body is an interesting idea though. I may do some research on this.

Many times. And you have made a point that I have nevered considered before. It has also happened to me while I was consciencous but in limbo not aware of my being awake. They say that if you dream that you are falling there is nothing to fear as long as you wake up before you hit. Wether there is any truth in this theory I have no way of knowing because I always wake up before the fall is complete.

That happens to me every now and again. I don't think it has anything to do with the soul leaving the body though. I always feel like I am going into another state of mind or another place that I don't always belong in.

three years ago my nose was broken because I was hit in the face with a softball. Now often right before I fall asleep I can "see" a softball coming at me and that jerks we wide awake.
