My recent post about gone with wind got me thinking of this particular cad..
Why is he appealing to me, these are the 3 reasons?
1) He is mysterious.. we don't know where he comes from, or where he disappeared to.. he just pops up and poof gone again.
2) He is the ultimate fusion of the perfect gentleman and bad boy..
'I don't think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly," Rhett Butler tells Scarlett O'Hara. "That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed and often by someone who knows how."
3) He does and doesn't give a damn...
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"
What's there not to love? Any other takers? Do you like Rhett Butler?

That is true, Charleston. But we don't really know what he gets up to there..
Or if its really Charleston or somewhere else.
There's an approved sequel explaining all of this, basically the "gone with wind" told from his point of view..
Not sure I'd like him as much once everything is neatly explained.
Yep I can't think of another actor who'd do a good job of Rhett, as Clark. I first seen the film at the age of 6, it is my Ma's all time favourite, and she watches it every Xmas

@just4him I think you're right.. he did have a dodgy background.. which just added more to his appeal

I am going to sound like a country bumpkin when I say this, but ALL my life I thought his name was Brett-uh, at the fear of saying anything else so stupid...I'll hush up now;).

From a male viewpoint, Rhett was a man's man. Tough. Takes no crap and sees Scarlet for what she is.

@Drosophila He put with the bs from her but only because he chose to. He saw through her when he had had enough, Frankly my dear....

Always wondered how or why Scarlett remained in love with Ashley when she was being pursued so ardently by this man whom many and almost all women would have loved. :)
Yeah...I think the reason could be Rhett Butler was accessible to her. He was not sufficiently bad. Had he flirted with another lady, then Scarlett might have noticed him.

When I think of Rhett Butler (and that picture made me smile BIG), I think of my mother. She used to aggravate my father by saying that "he can put his shoes under my bed". LOL! I can't stop laughing every time I hear her say that in my head now. Poor Daddy. Couldn't compete with a larger than life character. :D

he's the main dude in Gone with the wind.. the actor is clark gable..
He used to be a big deal in the 50s? (not sure) But most Irish women over the age of 50+ (my Ma's generation) swoons over him

@saurabhrmp yep.. there's no one bigger than him, he was called
"The King of Hollywood" at one time. And I think no one else ever took that title since.

@destimona no worries, he was a pretty big deal back in his days. was referred to as "The King of Hollywood" . Don't think anyone else ever took the title from him.

My favorite Rhett Butler character trait is his resourcefulness--like in the part where he saves Ashley and Dr. Meade and tricks the Yankee captain so he doesn't arrest them.

oh ya, on that front he's quite similar to Scarlet. Apparently there's the approved sequel Rhett B's people, who goes to examine his back story more.. but I do wonder if he'll still be appealing if we know it all

@puddleglum yep, apparently this book is Gone with the Wind told from his perspective.. once I've found out. I kinda gave up on it

@Drosophila Yeah...I think I prefer the mystery. Rhett Butler is an absolute; he's a force. He might not be that if we knew the back story.
