A Zero

Zero

I went to the bank yesterday after going to the doctors and I was talking to the financial advisor. Sometimes I wonder about people as a quirk of mine is hearing someone in that field talking about a specific amount of money or points and instead of saying zero they say O. I guess this bothers me because a financial officer at a bank should make me feel as if he/she knows their business and this not knowing the difference disturbs me. O is a member of the alaphabet and zero is a number. Does this ever bother you like it does me?

I do it all the time when giving a zip code or phone number. I never hear the word zero at the bank or financial advisor, or I would have a kniption! Lol!

@DianneN I wanted to say something to him because O is not a number. What kind of bank do you go to? lol

It didn't bother me as I know in some places, they call zero differently.

It wasn't until I started working at the call center that I started calling zero, zero and not O. I think most people look at the O and zero as being the same. It certainly looks the same when you write it on paper.

@just4him Well saying zero for a number is correct but saying O for a number is not correct as you now know even if they look the same on paper.

@jaboUK I know, but people don't realize the difference unless they are side by side and it's completely natural to say O instead of zero. I always say zero since I started my work in the call center.

This is not something that bother me. When I dictate telephone number and I am speaking with British people I always say O, because this is what they use.

@LadyDuck It does bother me but I guess if you are talking to someone and that is what they say you would say it but I wouldn't.

It doesn't actually bother me, but you are right - financial people should know the difference.

@jaboUK For me if you don't say the proper word for a number than you can't be all that good at your job. I won't deal with him again. It does bother me.

never heard someone sub that out, in my line of work O means O and 0 means 0, and you have to keep them separate!

I gotta admit, it doesn't really bother me .... I am just an old country girl, and I used to say O all the time, but have kind ofpicked up the habit of saying zero for the last five or so years, but all through school I would say O. Have a great day my friend.

@tuttiharris It's a quirk of mine but everyone should know to say zero when saying that number as o is different.

@Marcyaz HAHA sorry this makes me laugh because I admit that sometimes I do say O instead of zero. In fact sometimes I throw both options into the mix when I am giving someone a phone number. I have no idea why I do it and it actually annoys me a little bit while I am saying it!

@VivaLaDani13 I always say "zero" I used to get confused when I would hear people on TV use "O" instead. And I also like to say Hindi word for "zero" sometimes when I am feeling a bit silly coz no one uses the word.
