I wish to give my kids an outdoorsy childhood.

I'm a 20 year old. Much too young to discuss my children! But I am witnessing a scary tend among kids these days. Most of them do not have a life beyond their tablet or cell phone. So I asked a bunch of 5-10 year olds what games they played and what they did after school. I was shocked to hear that most of them either watched TV most of the times or played games on their gadgets or the more studious ones did their homework and completed assignments. I asked them if they played with their friends and most of them said that they only played indoor games or games on their computers.
This is very disturbing because I had a childhood where I played outside all day, went into the dirt and grime, climbed trees, collected flowers, made festive greeting cards and laughed heartily. It is worrying that my children are going to turn into couch potatoes and are going to be glued to their gadgets while there's a world out there to be explored. I want my kids to be outdoorsy and love being in the sun, splash puddles and have a crazy time.
I have decided that my children won't own a gadget until they're 10 or more (considering that the age to own a gadget would be much lower by the time I have kids) I know this may put them in a disadvantageous position with respect to them being tech savvy. But I'd inculcate a love for being outdoors in them and keep them busy in better ways. I want my kids to be Street smart and be independent from a young age. And if this means that I'll have to regulate my usage of electronics I'm willing to do that.
And I know my children will thank me some day for this.

Good thinking! You are wise beyond your age.. Yes indeed, children these days are not playing outdoors as much as the children back before the mid 1990s.. It's awful .. I hope your generation will do better job as parents ..

I genuinely hope so too.. All my friends agree that we'd all want to have a slightly different approach to raising our children and all of us want to give them a fun, outdoorsy childhood and inculcate a love for the outdoors even as adults because grown ups need some movin' too! :p

What you're planning to do with your future children is good. Playing outdoors would make their body stronger and they would develop stronger resistance to sickness. It will also make them sociable too.

id rather let my kids do crafting, i dont care if they paint our walls , as long as they can do something about their creative minds instead of being stuck in front of a monitor. its good that theyre learning computers and gadgets at an early age but not too much.

Yeah.. Children off late just don't seem to be enjoying crafting and all the other cool stuff that we used to do!!

I am with you on this one. Where I am, many impoverished children do not even have a yard to go to and if they did, too much violence so the parents don't want them outside. I worry about our next generations. I worry about their inability to understand much less care about history and past lessons hard won. So much shallow thinking and dependence on celebrities and how they look. It must be pure Heck raising kids these days. (I'm going on ancient and so far have managed to live without a smart phone or even a microwave or a TV. )

I completely agree on the celebrity obsession trend you're talking about.. Kids today have no sense of what is age appropriate and what isn't.. It's no surprise that 14 year olds are spotted bar hopping and dressing up like 21 year olds. I can understand the frustration of the parents who try to explain to their kids that the nature of their recreation and friendships must be different at that age.. Kids really are growing up too fast these days.

@Curlybobby One time I walked into Penneys and thought I was in the women's lingerie section. Turned out it was the girl's section! Why wear bras when you are not developed??

@sallypup In India, it still hasn't come that far though. But Indian kids are catching up soon with these trends too.
