One of my "sisters of the soil" tells me that this is an incredible edible weed. I have not tried it yet. It is interesting that everything I look up seems to be edible of late. Have you tried it? Would you try it? Of course she eats almost everything. She is twenty years older than I am and has outlived two husbands. Maybe I should try some.

If you don't know, don't take the chance. My grandfather poisoned both himself and his daughter after eating a mushroom that looked good to them.

I definitely will not mess with mushrooms. I let the experts grow those for me.

Actually kids pull the teeny tiny purple flowers off of this and suck the nectar out all of the time.

I know mushrooms are always dicey. I didn't know there was more than one type of edible mushroom until I read a book by Sheila Burnford called 'Fields of Noon'.

When my sister was in elementary school I helped her to collect edible plants. It was interesting to find so many plants that grew wild that could be eaten. Of course as the years have passed, so has my memory of what these plants were.

Our indigenous people know which of our bush plants are safe and which aren't. They call it 'bush tucker'.

@GardenGerty I'll have to check that out. I love to forage for edible plants.

It's an edible weed..... How would you eat it? Just bite into it? Or does it work like an herb or spice? I am sure a lot of plants are probably edible but that doesn't necessarily mean we want to eat it all.. Ha ha

You would pick it, wash it, and chop it into a salad or cook it like spinach or other greens.

I've been busy pulling up that very weed today, but I don't know what it's called. And no, I wouldn't eat it.

It is called Henbit. Kids sometimes call it honey suckle, which it is not, but they know that if you suck on the tiny purple flowers you can get a little nectar.

hovering over the pic i think this is henbit never heard of it but from what I looked up it is edible. " Henbit can be consumed fresh or cooked as an edible herb, and it can be used in teas"
Henbit is wild, edible and nutritious food. Identify henbit via its pictures, habitat, height, flowers and leaves.

No I wouldn't eat it as I'd not be sure I've picked the right thing. If it was picked by an expert I may well try it.

You are correct, it is henbit. It is a relative of the mint family. I have not tried it yet, but may yet this spring.

Not really knowing what it is, I would not want to try it. It looks familiar, but I am not sure what it is. Is it ajuga?

No, it is Henbit. Ajuga may grow like a weed but people buy it and plant it deliberately.

I haven't seen this plant before. But since you said it was edible, then it was edible. It just depends on whether it is delicious or not. If it tastes nice, I'd like to have a try. Otherwise I will leave it alone

It looks good anyhow. I've never tried it. I don't know if I've ever seen it around here. Must be your "sister of the soil" didn't feed all the good incredible edible weeds to her husband's.

@PrarieStyle Or maybe she was too healthy. She tells me a lot of stuff. Stuff about something called "structured water".And fermented bananas. It gives me something to search for on Swag bucks to get points.

We have it all over our yard in the summer and it makes me sneeze. I sure wouldn't eat it!

If it makes you sneeze it is a good idea not to take it internally. I gave my brother some herbal tea once, from Celestial Seasonings, not from the yard. It made him throw up, as it had chamomile which is evidently related to ragweed, and he is allergic. I am not, though.

If our stores lacked good wholesome foods, then I'd consider trying more things we have growing around us, but with me working two jobs that would take time to find appropriate edibles and cut them at the right time to then save for eating. If someone served it to me, I would gladly try some, but I probably won't go out of my way on my own to check it out.

You work plenty. I have a hard time making the time to do what I need to as it is, but since I live further from the stores, I may add it to some salads.

I was always fascinated by edible weeds. My grams always talks about pote salad but I don't trust it. Nope can't say I'll knowingly give it try.

Does it have a name?
