YouTube and copyrights

I understand the importance of copyrights, (as an author, I frown on people who steal another's work) but I have seen videos where people upload music from CDs and such. My question is, what about music that is played and sung? My daughter had her first solo Wednesday and I video taped it. She sang "The Hills Are Alive" from the movie The Sound of Music (with the instructor playing the piano). I think because it has this copyright issue, even though it is set to public, I am the only one who can view it. I saw a link to dispute it, but I am not sure if this is something I am able to dispute.

I reckon it isn't involved in copyright ,now that it is set to public.I know The Sound of Music and the song "The hills are alive with the sound of music."

I think YouTube was making sure I wasn't violating the copyrights. It is a really cool story and based on real life. The professor told a funny story in the beginning. He said there was a boy student who confessed to never have seen the movie in a room full of girls. I guess they about beat him up (not literally) and was calling his girlfriend and telling her he needs to watch the movie.

That's a good question, I think it's not an issue, we all sing songs that we didn't write or copyright. I think it's your video so you can post it without any problems.

I don't know the ins and outs of these issues either. It all seems very complicated.

Normally my videos are of my dogs or something interesting I see while I am out, so I didn't realize that some videos could be tagged by YouTube to check before allowing allowing others to see it.

Well I ve heard that in USA and UK you have the thing called "Creative common license", that allows using copyrighterd material as long as you dont make money out of it and make it only to show your creativity. So I think if you post that video under that tag no one will be mad at you. Also I ve seen many school play video tapings in youtube.

I try to not violate copyrights due to the fact that I am a writer and would not like it if someone used my hard work for their benefit, so I understand that part. However, I didn't consider these students singing songs from movies would alert YouTube. However, I am sure they were being cautious (which I admire, it means they will protect any of my original work, even though it isn't songs I write, but stories) and I didn't understand that if it is for educational purposes, it is allowed. So all is good, thanks.

Honestly I think you have a right to video record any song you perform in public as long as your not marketing it likes its your own

You're probably right and YouTube was just making sure I was violating the copyright before allowing other people to see the video.
