Who Cares!

Apparently our society doesn't give two hoots and a holler anymore about their fellow man. Remember a time when if you saw something that was wrong that you stepped in OR at least said something? It must be a rarity today. On February 7th, in Chicago, Illinois, a gentleman named Marques Gaines went to the local 7/11 at 4:30 in the morning. As he was leaving, a man approached him and knocked him unconscious and he fell into the street. Instead of passersby helping the man, people were coming up and robbing him as others just 'kept on walking'. Not a minute later, a Globe taxi came around the corner and ran the man over killing him. The security guard at 7/11 did absolutely nothing to help this man; during the altercation or after. The family of Mr. Gaines is suing 7/11, the cab company and it's driver and the security guard should be fired. Do we as a society just don't care anymore? "I don't want to get involved" or "It's not my place to intervene." How can we call ourselves "humans" when we have no "humanity".
Surveillance video released Thursday shows the troubling moments before a popular Chicago bartender was run over by a taxi cab after being beaten unconscious in a downtown crosswalk.

This is the result of overpopulation, and being preoccupied with making two ends meet, and of course materialism. Time for a rethink. It happens in India every other day...so population does create some amount of indifference.

@fedupjane .. In general, my observation is...more children, mothers tend to get harried. Father has to earn for more children and snaps when children ask him for something which he can't afford. Something the child does not understand, by the time he or she understands it is too late, he or she has already fallen in bad company. In India homes are quite close by. So there is more exposure to things in one one another's places. They bought an LCD tv? We should also have one. They bought a two wheeler, we should also have one kind. It begins with simple things. With smaller families desires are more easily fulfilled, and parents have more time to spare for their children.

I"m not sure how this has anything to do with overpopulation. We have certain demographics in our country that are responsible for 50% of the crime that happens in the US and they fall in our minority ethnic group. We can blame society all day long but we have poor people that do not steal, and screw over their fellow man. It really boils down to a lack of values.

Did we care before? I remember when I was a child that I was walking with my mom. A man had a heart attack just in front of us. My mother rushed to help, she called people asking for help and nobody went to help. We were glad that finally a cop heard and came and called an ambulance... this happened in the 50's.

thats so awful but again people will be looklie lous at an accident and not try to'help the person they are all staring at. darn. a few years back I went to my favorite restaurant to eat breakfast as I was celebrating being retired. I stepped up on a rise for some reason and fell hard on my left shoulder. a crowd gathered just standing there gawping at me. but grandparents and their grandson came to my rescueI could not get up as I could not use my left arm.I was in extreme pain and they called the para medics as a hospital was just seconds away I was soon at the hospital being x rayed and they found I had shattered my left shoulder joint so they did surgery and put in a steel andplastic shoulder joint. I did get to thank that elderlypair who cared.

Now see...the elderly couple were raised correctly @Hatley and that's the point. It seems like anyone under the age of 50 weren't taught right.

The topic made me think of a "what if " what if the man in trouble was a loved one? And you found out later on that nobody helped and even took advantage, I wonder if this would change your perspective of your fellow human being, just a thought.

@nanette64 times are really changing Nanette, it happens here sometimes because people do not want to be implicated or be questioned, but to rob is a different thing and the guard has a responsibility to the establishment as well as the customers.

The family is absolutely devastated @louievill and that's why they are suing. I can't believe that nobody stepped in and tried to help the man.

It is sad that some people don't try to help someone. You can call the police if you don't want to ask if they're ok. As for the cab running the man over that is just wrong. The man who ran him over did he know that he ran over a person?

OMG!! sometimes you just can hardly believe how horrible our society has become. I hope they catch the guy also that hit him and there should be a law about not even trying to help and just walking on. maybe some that didn't see what happened might have thought he was passed out but they should have watched for traffic till police got there

This is so sad! It is hard to imagine that no one would step in and help this poor man. I think many people are just too afraid to help. Our nation is becoming a nation of chickens and I use the word chicken instead of a another, not so nice word!

It´s very common to see this kind of behaviors in societies, especially when people are only looking to make their daily life. I once witnessed how a woman who was suffering from an epilepsy seizure was ignored by passers and by two security guards. An ambulance came half of an hour later and took this woman to the hospital.

People just don't want to get involved - I think they are afraid of repercussions. You'd think it would be a natural reaction to help, but not anymore it seems.

Unfortunately, one of the reasons this has happened in our society is because people get law suit happy. Even if you step in to help someone, if anything goes wrong they can sue you! And so many people want that money "just because". So a lot of people have given up helping anyone else. And now our whole world suffers :(

That is very sad. We do have people here that still do care and help you up if you fall or in my case if my scooter gets stuck there were people that want to help pull me out and get my scooter back on track.
