What Kind of Friends Do YOU Have?

United States

I came across this poem today and I thought I would share it with you. The author is unknown to me, but it is such a sweet poem, it's worth reading. “There are those who pass like ships in the night. Who meet for a moment, then, sail out of sight, With never a backward glance of regret, Folks we know briefly, and then forget. Then there are friends, who sail together, Through quiet waters and stormy weather, Helping each other, through joy and strife. They are the kind, who give meaning to life. What kind of friends do you have? I have several good friends and some who have "sailed out of sight." Picture by Pixabay

I have friends I see every day, I have others I see once a year, I have ones I see only on special occasions, but they are all friends regardless of our time together

That's a very good way to look at your friends. I feel the same way. I made a lot of friends when I was in business though and most of them I never hear from anymore. I guess they were more like business acquaintances, perhaps. I stay in touch with some of them.

@Inlemay That is so sad but at least you were in each others lives and made each other happy.

It IS a very nice poem. I have no idea who wrote it though. When I used to write down things like this for my own enjoyment, I never thought that I should have written down the author's name. But, I still wanted to share it. It could have even been on a greeting card.

That is a good poem and so true. Friends are those who are still in our life's and ones who have sailed out of sight.

I guess most people have a few of both. I like the analogy of sailing through stormy and quiet seas together.

I am very lucky to have so many good friends that I have made since I was 9 years old. I am now 73 and have had these friends for over 60 years. We are a very close group and don't see each other often as we have moved all over the states but in time of need we are all there for each other.

I believe having friends who are there in your worst of times are rarely found at least these days. The world has become more materialistic and the true esssence of love and friendship is left far behind only in poems and fairy tales. Though the world has more mean people there are good people also who always find happiness in helping others. Friendship is just a term to show love to ones you care for, be it your son, boyfriend, cousin, wife, or may it be strangers. Some or the other time people get along on any topic be it movies, cartoon, football, politics and there starts friendship but it is situation based not love based as love is free of any dependency.

Good friends are difficult to find, it's true. The world's atmosphere is not conducive to love and friendship. Are you a Bible reader? 2 Timothy 3:1-5 describes the world we live in today.

@kaanchi Yes, Jesus said: "All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must likewise do to them: this, in fact, is what the Law and the Prophets mean." If everyone treated everyone else the way they wanted to be treated, imagine what the world would be like. Unfortunately, most people in the world are too selfish to treat others kindly and so we have a world of trouble. They don't follow this "Golden Rule."

@IreneVincent Hi Alice, yes I have read. And will surely read again. But the fact is the world has become more materialistic, we are connected through social media and still we are not connected to each other from hearts. Its sad but true. We need to go back from where we have come, the nature and understand who we are and what is our purpose, everyone is everyone's friend and the whole world a family.
