She won't stop smoking

We just had our annual physical exam required by the company. My coworker was diagnosed with coronary artery disease. In short, she has heart disease. Because of her disease the doctor told her to cut back on fatty foods and exercise every day. She's also a smoker, so the doctor ordered her to stop smoking too. She easily gave up fatty foods and is now exercising every day, but she can't give up smoking. I'm not a smoker, so I don't know what it is about smoking that makes her refuse to give it up. It's stupid really. You would've thought that raising a son on her own would have been enough to make her stop smoking, but no. If her heart disease gets worse her son would be left an orphan.
