The quality of Presidential Candidate

Philippines and United States are going to hold election to select their President this year. If you think the quality of presidential candidates in US is bad enough, you should see the one in Philippines. Rodrigo Duterte said that he should be the first to rape an Australia missionary because he was the mayor. He referred to 1989 jail riot where the criminals raped and killed the Australia missionary. It seems that Filipinos like him because after the rape remark (though he apologized about a week later), he is clearly a forerunner. Though he promised death for criminals, he surely is only marginally better than the criminals. At first I feel sorry for the Filipinos for getting such a presidential candidate. However, after the poll shows that he has a clear lead, I think this is reflective of the attitude of the whole country. If the people support him, and think that he is far better than other presidential candidates, I doubt the country can get a strong and good government soon. If ever there is a presidential candidate as good as Ferdinand Marcos or better than him, Philippines has hope to become an Asia powerhouse.
A Philippine presidential candidate whose comments about rape provoked an international outcry has emerged as the "clear frontrunner" in the latest opinion s...

I think before the election, there will be a lot of scandals uncovered! Sometimes the result is shocking, and damaging to a good candidate. You sure have time to think carefully and make your decision.

I am not voting for a man with dirty mouth and I am a Filipino, not because there many Filipinos who support this man, it already means his attitude is reflective of the whole country. The fact is his supporters are after his promise that he will end criminality and lawlessness in this country which he has actually done in Davao where he served as mayor, but his mouth is dirty and that is not acceptable to me and to others who don't support him. Please don't generalize Filipinos, there are still lots of morally upright people in this land.

@scheng1 Apology accepted I am not a Catholic. I don't approve filthy communication whether be it joke or not. God does not approve that and it is clearly written in the Bible.

wow such comments would force his resignation here in the UK. We get a lot of coverage of the US candidates but hear very little on the Philipines election - hope Duterte doesn't get in

That is true. Even if they are good Presidents, they just cannot change the entire system to make it work more efficiently.

That was a horrible remark for him to make! It's sad when the candidates for president are all bad choices. I don't think the US has had good president since John Kennedy!

It is even sadder when you think about the people who support him, and give him a clear lead over the other candidates!

It is really a great wonder that how these scoundrels could still be the peoples' mandate despite the knowledge of their true colors. Sure speaks volumes about the morality of the people these days.

@scheng1 I have no doubts that there will be a volatile period of turbulence between countries and it is really up to him as to how much he wants to jeopardize his country from the consequences of his irresponsibility..

@scheng1 Interestingly I am wondering about the next presidential elections which holds another hot shot by the name of Donald Trump. I suppose people just like something more dramatic in the political scene these days.

I think the political stage in Asia is getting more and more exciting. Since he wins the election, he will become more and more arrogant, and he will think nothing of other countries in the region. For a person who can insult the Pope, I doubt he has anything good to say about the politicians in other countries.

I almost agreed with you until you mentioned Ferdinand Marcos. Yeah Noynoy sucks but Marcos? that guy put this country in a 25 billion dollar depth and killed a lot of people including my mom's brother. His first term is good because he followed a Good President which is Diosdado Macapagal. His second term basically turned this country into a more tame version of North Korea. The depth he caused is so bad no president after him is able to recover the country,

Yes, I have to agree that his last term was not good. It is better to have someone like Marcos, and then do not elect him for long. Once they start to think that the country belongs to them or are indebted to them, they will become a dictator.

@cacay1 It is easy to be a Mayor, because that job is more of internal management. A President has to manage the whole country, and the relationships with many other countries. He has already offended Australia with the rape remarks, and he has offended Singapore by saying that he is going to burn the flag. Once he becomes President and starts offending all other countries, just see how good the economy will be in Philippines.

In choosing for a presidential candidate, one shouldn't look at the outside trait of a certain person, just what you usually hear in and believe in with the saying don't just the book by its cover. Politicians nowadays are very hideous of their real identity, like a snake just waiting for a right time to shed its skin. We should also consider the different contributions each politicians have made in the country, and if you're supporting someone, and he/she did something wrong, you shouldn't defend him/her for the wrong doings. This country doesn't need a good president, it needs its people to start changing first, no matter who will be the candidates or the president.

The whole system has to change. I agree that it is too much for a person to change, even if that person is a great President.

Lol just like how people judge manny pacquiao when he said something about the LGBT community. I feel insulted some how when trump is being compared to trump since du30 has a track record of public service to speak of compare to trump who is a complete businessman. maybe people can disagree manny being on the senate but du30 is a different kind of public servant. I don't give a dime what you folks think of him. You only care and knew my country as a third world and ofws, since when did it matter to you that the people in this country wanted change! The media is so bias here that it made du30 extremely popular and strong among the Filipino people here and abroad.
