Artists You Love But Don't Buy Their Music

Was reviewing comments at this discussion about Prince - “A Freaky Top Ten Track List – Prince "Purple Rain" by @freak369 and the remarks have taken me in different direction. They say the sales of Prince's greatest hits or the best of Prince album have sky rocketed. Would you believe it? I don't own a single album by Prince. Ever had a singer /songwriter/musician whose music you really liked but your never bought their records, albums, CDs, cassette tapes, whatever?! For me, Prince is one of those artists. Also David Bowie; Carlos Santana; and Hall and Oates. I never bought their music because their songs were played so often on radio or television there was no need to buy their stuff. For that reason and also, I was always kind of tight on cash. However, many of my friends did buy their music, and they would let me come hang out with them and allow me to play whatever I wanted to listen to. Fortunately, for me my husband likes to tape concerts and performances from television. He has quite a collection of video tapes of concerts and/or live performances and music videos from channels like MTV and VH1. Whew! Glad music collecting is his hobby!
If you ask a hundred people one simple question, 'What's your top ten list of all time favorite songs?' you would get a ton of different answers. Music,...

you lucky lady. Your husband collects music. I had to tape music on the radio with the dj talking through the whole song. And still do. To listen to the music uninterrupted was a real treat. I only have the CD to one artist and that was Whitney Houston. I didn't even have music to my all time favorite Michael Jackson. Maybe I'll break down one day and get the CD's even though it's half a century later.

@db20747 - iTunes? Now you're really make me see how far behind we are. My son gave me his old laptop and he's got something on here for his music called Zune. (???) I don't dare touch it. I'm afraid I might crash my computer!

@cmoneyspinner Wow! What is zune? Always something new. Sounds very interesting and exciting. I'm looking for ways to get free music these days. If I could use it to do that, that would be perfect.

@cmoneyspinner we're getting there. One of these days we'll figure out digital music, iTunes, uploads and all that stuff. By then they'll have some new technology to get music. Maybe through the air. But we're getting there.

@MGjhaud - WiFi? Oh yeah! When we're having problems with our Internet access, my daughter will leave the apartment, and go to a restaurant close by in the neighborhood like a McDonalds, because they have WiFi. Wait! Let me correct. Free WiFi!! You say have to pay. Well now I know just how important free WiFi is!

Answer: zero. Any artist I love I support. I have the CD, 45, and LP collection to prove it, too. Even if I don't have "everything" (I only owned two Hall & Oates albums, for instance) I still went to see them live. (And, to that end, Hall & Oates was one of the loudest concerts I have ever attended!)

I so envy you. You got to see Hall and Oates perform live! I haven't been to too many live concerts in my lifetime. I remember two from when I was very young. The Jackson 5 and Gladys Knight and the Pips. Both were at the Miami Beach Convention Center. My late sister and I also saw The Manhattans perform at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Went to see The Ohio Players perform at a popular club in Miami Beach, Florida. That's all I can remember.

I owned a Prince album but that was many years ago (in the 80s) , I am pretty sure it was a cassette tape ( remember those)?

I have a sad story about cassette tapes. My husband kept trying to convince me that buying CDs was the way to go. But I insisted that CDs were going to be like 8-track tapes and fall by the wayside. I wanted all my good music on cassette tapes. We were in a music club and they gave us a choice. Tape or CD. Finally my husband started buying CDs regardless of my objections. Now I'm mad at myself. Because I have lots of good music on cassette tapes that I wish I had in the CD format. The only reason I have the CDs I do have is because my husband ignored me and started buying CDs anyway. At least one of us could see the future!

@LeaPea2417 - You are so right. I have screwed up many cassette tapes. My husband should have convinced me sooner about the CDs.

@cmoneyspinner I remember the frustration with cassette tapes. They would get caught in the player and I would have to take a stick and try to wind it, but then a kink would get into the part of the tape that got caught and it would warp the sound.

So true, music whic played nonstop on the radio i never get to buy, but there is a song i will listen to once and i know i must have that. In december i was in the bus but asleep, heard a song but only 4 words, only registered in my mind days later when i asked a sister who was with me,she did not remember, took me 3 months to find it in you tube as i had to search only with the 4 words i heard while half asleep. Recently i buy less and less music

YouTube music uploads revolutionized the way we relax and entertain ourselves. My husband finds artists that we will never see on TV. He likes world music. I'm glad because I can find gems from the past that I haven't heard in ages! It's great to be able to find on the Internet. But still, it's also nice to have a music collection because every once in a while, you can't get Internet access. No Internet access? No YouTube.

I would say there are quite a few, especially since I have access to YouTube and a YouTube downloader site. I don't have any David Bowie albums; I don't even have any Ultraviolet Hippopotamus albums! But whenever either one comes on the radio, I get excited! I've actually been to a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert ... but I don't have any of the albums! Now that I said that, I should go get some TSO albums! But much of the music on the radio I like, but I don't have the albums; somehow I finally got a Lady Gaga album and a Justin Bieber album two and a half years ago, but I don't have any Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, or Michelle Branch albums. But the more I talk about not having albums, the more I want them! Especially Michelle Branch!

I know what you mean by wanting more. If I got turned loose in a music store with orders to get whatever I wanted, I'd just ask if I could have the keys to the store. I wouldn't know where to start. My husband and I used to buy from a discount club a while back. We accumulated quite a few CDs and cassette tapes. But we're not in that club any more. Budget got tight and we had to give up something! Oh my! The Trans-Siberian Orchestra??!! They came to Austin, Texas one time but I couldn't afford the tickets. Did you know that Tina Turner performed her last concert in Austin before retiring. I didn't go but my friends did. Another group that I've always loved and didn't even know they were still giving concerts? Tears for Fears. By the time I realized they were performing in Austin, it was over! My husband taped the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. I did buy some Tina Turner albums when we were in the discount club. My kids downloaded some Tears for Fears songs and burned a CD. It turns out they like the music from my generation.

I have never been a collectionist of music or buyer. I have a brothe who buys the music he likes. In the present it is even more remote that I buy any music from whatever artists, when one can listen or download the music from the internet.
