Wiley the escape artist cat

Let me tell you about my cat, Wiley, and the problem I have with him. When I first moved into my apartment, a little over a year ago, when it's a beautiful day like today, I let my cats out to have fresh air. Wiley wanders on the patio and then escapes to my neighbor's patio on the other side. I first thought this was a phase in the beginning. But now it's an annoyance that gets him in trouble, big time. When I know he's escaped to a patio, I can hear him or see him in the corner. And that's when I have to prompt him to come over to my side. I've blocked the railing with chairs in the past. But he seems to get past it somehow. I need a brick wall or like an invisible fence for dogs. I had a little scare this Sunday on my lazy day, when Wiley, (aptly named after Wiley E. Coyote by my brother when he had him, a decade ago), disappeared. I've checked both patios and called out his name. I've even brought out a bag of treats. So I had to go outside and towards the front of the building to see the patios up front by the parking lot. After I called out his name, I saw him and heard him meowing like a lost cat. Though relieved, I told him to stay put and went back inside my apartment. When I returned to my patio on the 5th floor, he was by the door when I let him in. Seriously, I was happy to find him, my Mylotter friends. But I thought I would have peace of mind, if I supervise him at all time and block the patios. I wish he could be like his brother Marshall, who goes in front of the patio and rolls around for a few minutes, right near the table. I swear to God, I think he should be renamed Houdini in my opinion. Any ideas to prevent his future patio escapes? I'm all ears.

Yeah he's a barrel of laughs. I did manage to catch him in the act and stop him from going places he shouldn't go.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what you could do to keep him where he belongs. But I hope you can figure this out!

Hmm. It's just a balcony patio. Maybe.

Wiley's disappearing acts will surely worry you. Our cats (3 of them), use to go outside of our house, after meals. Understandably, it's for their toilet stints. And we like that so much, than suffer from "that" smell. But, they come back after a while. We need not call for them. I wish your Wiley will do just that.

@KnehKnah I don't have a cage for him. But I do have his kennel cage. That's too harsh though.

If putting him in a cage will not be punishable by Law, most likely I will suggest that, my dear @KristenH .

Could you put him on a long enough leash so he could roam the patio but not get onto anyone else's?

Well I don't have a leash for him. Not a bad idea.

@msiduri True, but if you have the rail blocked, that shouldn't be a problem.

@KristenH @just4him The only thing I would worry about with a leash is if he jumped off the railing and hanged himself.

I have no idea what to tell you I have had cats in the past. I have tried about everything to keep them in one spot where I want them but cats are cats they are gonna climb if they have to. Unless you do the kitty leash or the enclosure as others have mentioned that is really all I know to do. Good luck with him.

One of my dogs is an escape artist as well. It took us a while to figure out how he was escaping, he is like a mouse he can make himself very small.

That sounds like Wiley, when he's hiding with my neighbor's plants, eating or scratching them for his back.

The only way would be to block off the patio and that would not be possible.

True. At least he stayed away from the railing this morning. I did catch him in the act yesterday though.

Henry (my Bengal kitten) was born and raised in a barn until he was five-months-old. Adjusting to indoor city life was difficult for him at first, but now he is "the king" and want me to go to bed. Anyway, when that kitty is ready, Wiley will let you know.

Wiley sounds like fun.... he probably is just living up to his name and enjoying getting into trouble! :) We have 2 cats, but they much quieter in comparison. Love to laze all day
