New Underground Trains

There is a slow revolution taking place on London's Tube. With the increasing number of people working in the city the underground system struggles to cope. The solution for the 'Sub Surface' has been the introduction of new trains. Instead of separate carriages, you can walk from one end to the other. More people can be carried, as there is more standing room. Maybe not the best answer, but most of the journeys are fairly short. Along with investment in new track and signals, London Underground may finally get dragged into the new century.

I hardly ever go on underground trains although we used them quite a bit when we were overseas.

Probably something they should have done years ago, huh?

Spot on, the Underground and transport in general has been suffering uninvestment. Now we are paying the price

@Ronrybs Yes there has been little investment since the Thatcher government. London needs more trains and more lines in my view. This contributed to me leaving the city.

It seems like all big cities have their transportation problems. New York has its, with the subway system not exactly up to par. Even Denver has transportation problems and has been trying to come up with fixes for it.

@Ronrybs I don't know who it would have been, but it wasn't me. Although I live within a couple of hours, I seldom go to Denver so all I know about the transportation problem is what I read or see on TV.

By your picture it seems there are not so many people taking the train.

I haven't been on the tube for ages, but don't like it. People just crammed together, no scenery to look at.

In the city, once you get outside and in the open its a lot like a normal train

Yes, should have mentioned that it is all flexi-linked. Quite enjoy a ride on those 'S' stock trains

I am not sure more standing room is good. When I last lived in London (some 20 years ago) I used to think that the tube needed more lines to serve areas that have no service. London is a growing city and the Underground is not growing.

@Ronrybs One of the reasons I had for leaving London was failure to invest and expand the network.

After years of under investment it is costing a fortune to play catch up. There is work on a new underground rail line, Crossrail, and that is costing over £14 billion. There is already planning starting for a Crossrail 2

Our cities population keep expanding but the transport system has stayed the same for years.Hope this will help in reducing the congestion in trains. As you say, these journeys are usually short so compartments are really not needed.

Indeed, it is now costing more time and money to catch up on work that should have been done decades ago
