I have Cancer!

(Stunned silence)
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I blurted it out. I have been trying to say for awhile!
Mom, my aunt (Mom's sister), my older cousin (Aunt's daughter) and I were sitting there talking. One thing led to another and I spilled the beans.
(Stunned silence continues)
.
.
.
.
My aunt grabbed me and started crying. I felt awkward. I don't like it when people hug me. But I didn't push her away or even showed the displeasure outwardly.
She is a very sensitive and emotional person. Gets hurt very easily. So, I stayed put. I tried looking at Mom for help but my aunt had me properly caged in her arms.
Then she started blabbering and sobbing. I didn't know how to behave with a crying person.
In my head, I was thinking "Where is Mom when you need her?" I seriously needed her right then. But she was just sitting there and watching.
Finally, after a million years, my cousin slowly pulled her mother away from me. When she had regained a little of her composure, she started talking.
"W..when did that happen? How?" She started patting my head, hair and looked me over. Then turned to Mom. "Why didn't you tell me?" Angry and hurt.
"Everything is fine." Mom replied. My aunt didn't let her finish.
"FINE????" She said aghast. "Your young daughter has Cancer and you say everything is fine?" She yelled at Mom.
Shocked I whirled around....
"What?" I gasped. Normally, I don't interfere between elders. But this was different.
"Oh geez!!! I don't have Cancer. I said I am Cancer. Not I have Cancer." I replied.
(Actually, "I am Cancer" doesn't sound any better. She misheard me. She was soooo embarrased. We were shocked. I learned to properly say, "My sun sign is Cancer." to avoid any mishaps in the future. Ever had a blunder moment like that? Or a mishap?)
A good example of miscommunication.

@Daljinder Because Linda Goodman was just ditched by a guy ...who happened to be born in one of those days and she had to give a bad name...don't worry..we are slow killers when compared to scorpions...(cancer is a type of crab).

Simply put, my aunt did not hear the whole thing and just heard "Cancer". Also in general, people refer to the sun signs in Hindi names like "Tula" for Libra, "Kark" for Cancer, etc...
I don't refer to them in Hindi. I get confused with their Hindi names. So, I use English names. LOL
Hence the situation.

I should have said "Kark" (which is a Hindi word for this sign) instead of Cancer. But I get confused with the Hindi names for sun signs. So, I am in the habit of using English names.

@vandana7 Ok, so that "I am Cancer" implied the zodiac. Now I better understand.
Is that zodiac the one they use in India or the Sun Sign they use in the West? I ask this because most of the newspaper and other such columns that I find even in Indian Magazines seem to ape the West and follow their pattern.
Now that we are discussing zodiacs, Indian astrology (which uses the tithi and the time of birth - kundali thing) says I am a Cancerian (heck!) and even my mom is. But the Western Sun Sign or even its copied version prevalent in India says that I am either a Virgo or a Libra - in fact I can be any at the moment - just because I was born on the first day of the cusp and the timings... they were all zeroes on the clock - and I just love following these because I am more at home with them - all zeroes interests me more.

It wasn't funny at the moment. But later... waaaay later it was amusing. Shows how miscommunication can create issues out of nothing.

It wasn't a joke. lol I am giving an example how miscommunication happens. And in a way annoyed at the name my sun sign has. Like really? Why Cancer? Couldn't find a good name for the sun sign?

The conversation was on and around the sun signs. They were obviously talking in their mother tongue. lol Which I don't do unless absolutely necessary. All the sun signs have different names in Hindi language. And I never use Hindi names for sun signs. I actually get confused by which is which in Hindi. So, when I answered something and told my sun sign is "Cancer". I should have said "Kark" which is what Cancer sign is named in Hindi. So, you see how all the confusion came about? My aunt heard only Cancer and went with it.
Yes, later we laughed at the incident and so did she.

WOW! You know how to cause panic in me! I've always hated that sun sign because it's mine too and I feel like it's a disease not something to be happy about. I was very happy when they changed the sign to Moon Child back when I was a kid, but they still call it Cancer. By the way, I don't follow the astrological signs and horoscopes or horrorscopes as I call them. They aren't accurate anyway, just something man made up to make money from and make people feel good or bad depending on his whim.

@Daljinder I see you changed your username. Yes, they changed it back when I was still living at home. Long time ago, but it never caught on. I don't even read them for a good laugh. If I want a good laugh, all I need to do is come here and interact with a certain trio of people.

Sorry!
I don't hate my sun sign. I just don't like the name. I have heard and read this sign referred to as "Moon Child" but I thought it was because this sign is ruled by the Moon. I didn't know that the name itself has been changed.
Something new to learn.
I don't follow the horrorscopes (This is funny actually because that's exactly what I call them too. ) either. But I admit that I read them. They make a fun read. LOL Sometimes they are so ridiculous and make me laugh.

She is very soft hearted. So we had to tread lightly after that. Lest we ended up hurting her feelings.

@Daljinder The title of your discussion creates confusion, because you said "I HAVE CANCER" when in fact "you are cancer", correct?

@Yar_Joey Correct! The main point of doing the discussion was to point out how mixing both sentences creates confusion leading to miscommunication. The word "cancer" is enough of a scare.

Ah! No she is rarely if ever mad at anyone. Miscommunication can create misunderstandings. lol This cancer sign thing had me in similar situation with other person too. So, now I properly say "My sun sign is cancer" instead of "I am cancer" It sounds wierd.
