I looked out my window last evening and saw a strange sight. These two ducks were on the lawn under the cedar tree. I quickly went for my camera and was able to get this picture. There was a squirrel running around the tree, and the male duck took a walk as if he was investigating. I tried to get the squirrel in the picture as well, but he took off when the duck got close to him, so I captured this picture as the male was returning to his mate. There is a swimming pool on the other side of our building, and saw a pair of ducks in there last year. I am thinking this is probably the same pair who have returned.

That's nice that you have a pair of ducks nearby. What a pity the squirrel took off.

@AnneEJ I need to be careful what I wish for but I think a little squirrel or two would be great to have around the place.

@AnneEJ Yeah, I haven't been on as much. We've been out doing a lot. I'll definitely try to be around here a little more over the next few days. It's definitely nice out now.

I probably will. Haven't heard much from you lately. I am sure you are spending as much time outside as you can. I went for a long walk this afternoon, it is nice out.

We have a lot of ducks here. We have a park here that ducks congregate in. People feed them their old bread. A lot of ducks are seen on sidewalks or in yards around here. I have been in traffic and wondered why the people in front of me had stopped. Looking I see a family of ducks crossing the street.

@AnneEJ ....Yes, we have a river running through it and so we have a lot of birds roaming around. Parks all over too. Nice city. We love feeding them.

Yes there are always lots near the water. The reason they stay around is because people feed them. Where I used to live, there were signs telling people not to feed them, but they did anyway.

I can imagine @AnneEJ kritters are the toughest subjects to try to get good shots of and wildlife is the hardest.

I was surprised, the male didn't seem to notice me and the female had her head tucked under her wing the whole time I was watching them

What a precious snap !Are they mallards? The fact that there are squirrel and ducks (wild) proves that you have a good ecological environment.

They probably are. Ducks usually come back to the same place.

They are a cute little couple, and since they are known for being territorial, they are probably the same couple you saw last year. We used to have a pair that would come in March or April to the low lying spot in the field behind us that would usually be flooded. We loved to watch those 2 ducks.

I have my window open and I just heard some quacking, so I presume they are around at the swimming pool today.

I was really surprised how well the picture turned out. I have another one of just the male walking towards the building. I will have to share it as well.

I see JJ has already told you what they are. The males are so beautiful, but the female is just brown. Probably so she can camouflage her nest when she is sitting on the eggs.

I like the colors of the ducks. The ones we have here in my country are usually white ones.

Sometimes it seems ducks do like to live in pools. One community I lived in a duck with an injured bill lived in the "lazy river" portion of the city pool. Neat for you to see I am sure.

I am wondering if they make a nest near by. I must keep an eye out. It would be something to have baby ducks in the pool later on.
