I must say that until a few minutes ago, I had never seen a red sunflower and was very surprised to find out that they do exist. I learned this fact from this website right here: Our neighbor has yellow sunflowers and I always thought that they came only in yellow. Are you aware of this red sunflower?

@jaboUK It is hard to believe that there wouldn't be "sunflowers" in such a sunny country!

I have never come across a red sunflower, but I just asked my husband and he has. They had greenhouses when he was growing up, and he remembers seeing seeds for them in the books they ordered from.

My sister grew some like these years ago. She said they were "Mexican sunflowers". I know they were gorgeous. Hers was more of a bush and less of the straight up tall one.

Yep. The first greeting card I ever designed was a photo of a red sunflower I'd grown in my garden. This year I'm planting a few black sunflower seeds, along with the yellows.

@marlina Yes, I wasn't on zazzle at the time, but rather on cafepress, an account I've since closed. In the sandy soil of Buffalo, Texas, where I was living at the time, it was just about the only thing I could get to grow in my then-new garden. It does look a bit worse for the wear, lol. Surprisingly to me, the card actually sold. Woot.

What a pretty flower! I have never seen one before. Every summer our neighbors grow those large sunflowers that are something like you would see in Alice in Wonderland. They make our street look so happy! :-)
