Is a Credit Card with a chip really more secure?

I got a new debit card in the mail telling me to activate it because it has this new "advanced chip technology". I feel the US is years and years behind on this - when I went to Canada and Europe years ago they had already had chips (and many places were confused because me and my traveling partners cards were chip-less). Here in the US - half the card readers at shops do not even have a spot for chips. So we swipe them anyway. Do you have credit and debit card with chips in it like here? What has been yor experience with them? Do you really find them more secure?

All credit cards and a lot of debit cards have a new EMV chip in Europe, and a debit card without this chip would not be accepted most of the time for online transactions. The chip encrypts any transaction with a strong algorithm, making the use of a card online a lot more secure than in the past.

Thats cool. But how does that come into play when you make an online or over the phpne purchase?

It may seem the case. However, when someone gets a hold of your card information, including the CVV, there is no such thing as 'secure' anymore.

@maezee You get an unique number for each online transaction, and this number cannot be used for another transaction. Personally I would not give any information on a credit card by phone, as a phone call can be intercepted, and it is one of the main sources of troubles with credit cards.

OH is it so? Well I was under the impression that the mighty US of A was years ahead than the rest of the world.

It may look like it is more secure, thanks to the chip, for which I really don't understand what it is for, as, honestly, it doesn't do anything. Remember that when you use your card online, it is transmitted electronically, meaning, it's nothing physical, hence the care chip it's of much use as anyone with the right knowledge and tool can intercept internet traffic. All you have to make sure is that the transmission is secure and/or use a payment gateway that is secure. I do not use my debit card, directly, I course my payment through PayPal, in that way, if anything goes wrong, I can get my money back with no problems.

I think it is secure. and also forging without 2 step authentication is harder with the new cards with chip.
