Written Instructions

Let me tell you a story. A few short years ago, my daughter bought a plain screen door. I helped her install it. It was a simple job that took us about a half hour. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. I needed a new screen door for the garage so I could air things out without worrying about flies and squirrels. Not a big deal, right? Except that no one seemed to have plain jane screen doors. I bought what they had, brought it home and we opened it up and went..."Huh??" After the first paragraph of instructions, my eyes glazed over and my daughter claimed a headache. It was adjustable. There were odd pieces and weird pieces. The instructions might as well have been all in Chinese (part of them were). We looked at each other and decided to ask my son to look at it. He is a whiz at all things mechanical and otherwise. He solves puzzles without trying, comes up with solutions I would never think of. I waited expectantly, but even he couldn't figure it out. He found a video online that showed how to do it and went and looked at all the pieces again. Finally, he said he could probably figure out how to hang it but he would do it his way. Does anyone need a screen door? I will give it to you.

At that point I might have called a handy man to see if he could just make one. Everything is becoming such a joke! What happened to simpler is better? Less is more? Oh good grief. I hate that you've even had to go through that. It's so ridiculous!

I really wish I had done that to begin with, but I don't know if there are handymen around here who would even try to make one. Daddy used to make ours. They're (supposed to be!) simply a frame with screen in it. Oh, well...

@CRK109 You know, I have put in screen doors myself before and I've rescreened them, too. That's why I was so frustrated with this thing. I'll get it done one way or another, if it means tossing it and starting over!

@peavey Exactly! It should be pretty simple. We have a local hardware store in town that will put screens into windows or doors or whatever needs it. So I know that there are people who understand the simplicity of it. I really hope you can get this done. It sure sounded simple enough to me!

That is pretty sad that you could not put a screen door together.

It really is. What a mess! It should be illegal to sell something like that.

He hasn't yet, but he said he would try. My daughter and I did a little wagon like that one time. I finally gave up and threw the leftover parts away. I still have the wagon!

It's crazy, isn't it? Whatever happened to plain, simple products that work? Or to common sense, for that matter?

Perhaps you should 'screen' any purchases?

I need one but I don't live near you. I am not good at put it together puzzles. Always a piece left over and then the whole thing falls down.

You probably wouldn't get along well with this screen door, then! I never saw anything like it.

@akalinus You're welcome to it, then! My son watched a video of how to do it and that's when he said he could do it his way. Maybe you could, too. I can usually figure things out, but not this one.

@peavey If I see a picture of how something should look, I can sometimes make it look that way. Emphasis on sometimes.

i've never heard of a put together screen door.that's new to me. we've still using the aluminum doors my grandma bought about 45 years ago. i'll never get rid of them.i looked at newer doors for farts and giggles and some look so shoddy nowadays.

That's exactly it. A screen door should be simple. This is anything but simple!

Ha ha! It reminds me of the bunk beds we got several years ago. My boyfriend was trying to figure out the instructions and I could see his frustration. I walked over to take a look and ran far far away. lol. He did a great job of putting it together. It took him hours to figure out, but he eventually got it done. :)

I have to wonder about the people who write some of these instructions! LOL

@peavey Probably translated from some other language and loses a lot in the translation. I especially love it when key parts are missing or they refer to parts that are not part of what you are trying to assemble.

Oh no! That's terrible! Whoever heard of an adjustable screen door? That's nuts! I think you ought to just be able to measure your opening, then buy the door that fits that size. Did you ever find one that would work?

My thoughts exactly. Why can't I just measure what I need, go to the store and buy it? What a mess. My son said he would try to put it up so I will wait for him.

It sounds good. The doors in my place are weird sizes, nothing standard. Adjustable sounds ideal, but not if you can't figure out how to do it.
