Now be honest....Do you lie?

I believe that we have all lied for one reason or another. Whether it was a white lie to make someone feel good or maybe a huge lie to get out of doing something you didn't want to do. I was a pretty honest child. I didn't want to do wrong by anyone and always respected my friends and adults. When I was with my ex, I did lie quite often. But it was never anything horrible. It was just me saying I was busy when I actually wasn't so I could get out of hanging with him. If you read about my ex, you would understand. The ONLY white lie I tell nowadays is saying I am "Fine" when I'm actually not when people ask me how I am. I even feel bad for that but I find it easier than explaining what's going on. Other than that I don't want to lie. I don't want people doing it to me so I don't do it to others. I do admit all the times I have lied. Not happy about it but at least I'm honest about it. What about you? Do you make a point on not lying? How do you feel about people lying to you? Ever caught someone out on a lie or someone caught you out?

I rarely lie nowadays - just the odd white lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings. Besides, I can't rely on my memory to remember my lies so it's best just to stick to the truth. :)

@hora_fugit Aren't you ever worried about hurting people from lying? Or people never trusting you if they find out you're a liar?

I really try not to lie, but I will sometimes tell little white lies. Like you, if someone asks me how I'm doing, i might say that I'm fine, even though I'm not. There are just those times when I don't want to talk about what's going on. Some times I'm just not in the mood. Otherwise, I try not to lie as a general rule of thumb.

@VivaLaDani13 Yeah absolutely. I was just giving it as an example. But other than little white lies I don't try not to lie. If it doesn't hurt anyone, like little white lies, then it's not the end of the world.

@dodo19 I'm not saying it because you and I do this but I think it's fine to lie about that. I mean who is going to get offended from us lying about how we feel about ourselves? Not hurting anybody anyway.

Yes, it really depends on the situation. So many reasons also why a person lie. Sometimes because she/he wants to avoid somebody or maybe he/she wants to make the other person happy or better to lie than die.. ha ha ha..

I work at being as honestly as possible and when I realize that I didn't exactly tell the truth I'm not happy. I believe that a lie is a lie and there are no good results from telling one. I'll keep working on keeping going in that direction.

@VivaLaDani13 I agree with your thinking. I was just reminded of the following: Proverbs 6:16-17 New International Version (NIV) 16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, As far as I'm concerned it is not what some people may think that is important but rather what God thinks.

@1hopefulman At Bible class today we read and discussed Psalms chapters 1-10 and came across this verse: Psalm 5:6 New International Version (NIV) "you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest."

I agree. Plus it does seem that every liar gets caught out sooner or later. I'd rather just not lie so I don't have my conscience bothering me at night.

yes for sure, I lie. but that depends - where and why. Though today, I avoid and try being honest. You cannot be brutally honest if you want peace and harmony in your world and you do have to act diplomatically at times.

@VivaLaDani13 Person? No. Not many in the real world have a heart to handle the truth. I would go with the situations instead. There are barely any who would say tell me the truth in a complicated and skewed situation. But at the face of it not many will expect the truth to be told, but keep on yelling out to the world that they want the truth.

@thesids I see what you're saying. Makes sense. But again, it does depend on the person and situation. Sometimes people really want the truth even if they know it will hurt.

white lies you say? yes.. I do. I'm not ashamed of it, it's just that some people don't take the truth like I do. what I'm trying to prevent is conflict (that's bad) and I often end up saying only the good stuff while leaving out the bad for their own disclosure. When I'm uncomfortable about the truth but have to really say it like to my husband,. I let it sit for a couple of days and I will take it to him piece by piece , waiting for his reaction. He would just smile and say, what took me so long to say it. And would encourage me to be more open to him. It works fine, but I sometimes wish I can be the type of person who will just say it without thinking too much about other people's reaction

@VivaLaDani13 thanks! I'm just happy that everytime I'm open and honest there's always a positive feedback. It's not that I really lie lol don't get me wrong, it's the avoidance of saying or talking which is my problem. If I'm not asked to tell the truth then I won't talk at all.

I always lie that I am busy doing something just because I do not want to talk to the other person. We cannot avoid telling lies sometimes. I think its part of our lives. Just don't make it a habit for we know that it is against the rule of God.

@magallon Habit or not, if God tells us not to lie, wouldn't that mean, never lie? Instead of only doing it sometimes?

@VivaLaDani13 @magallon I had this kind of talk with someone. The person said, "Lying is a sin" I and friend said that sometimes lies are told for "greater good" which we call "white lies" The person said "This is a sin. There are no white lies. I will never lie. My God never lies and He will not condone it. Anyways it's your soul that is in danger. Not mine." I and friend again asked "What if there is a small child who has only few months to live? Would you tell that child the truth about his condition or lie? Because we would never have the courage to tell a child that your time is up." The person said "Why would I lie? It's a sin." That shut me up pretty good.

@VivaLaDani13 ... True! God tells us never lie but the question is, is there a single individual who did not and never never lied all his life? I think there's none. I believe that all human beings lie for so many reasons. It comes with our existence. When we started to exist in this world and began capable of thinking, we already start to lie. Sometimes because the situation needs it or there are times that we really have to do it even if we know that maybe our conscience will bother us. If we can avoid lying, then, why tell a lie. Sometimes, rarely, always, once, it's still the same, we lie. Actually, I hate liars especially if they do it habitually. It is easy to tell if the person is lying.

In general I try not to lie but sometimes I feel I am too honest. I like to be honest and open up to people with the hope that I'll earn their trust. I lied once to a bus driver by showing him an expired pass if you consider that lying. Or maybe that is stealing...

@watkinsdani First I just have to say that we ALMOST have the same name lol My name is Danielle and with a little rearranging and adding a couple more letters to the last name BOOM same name lol Anyway, I understand what you are saying. I be as honest as I can even to the people who are constantly lying and / or being two faced to me. Makes me wonder if I should even bother being too honest and too nice to them. I'm sure you had good enough reasons for the whole bus pass situation.

I'm guilty of telling some lies in my time - white and otherwise. I'm pretty forgiving so unless its over something big, or repeatedly, I won't get too mad at someone for lying to me. I'm ashamed to admit it, but if someone catches me in a lie - I'll tell a second lie to cover it up.

you are talking is not lying while you are saying i am fine even you not and while you say your ex to you are busy even you not is lying because that both are different thing... while you say to your ex that because you not like to spend time with him and you want to avoid and in second part you not want to show them that you are not fine because they may worry for you therefor so second one i like change in you because you are responsible person... yes in our life we are lying someway as i also like while i watching tv and my mom or dad ask me that go and buy some items from store at that time i said no mom please send brother as i am very tired or feel not good so its lying and while i am child i done it lots of time....sorry mom

@VivaLaDani13 LOL Like a famous Hindi movie dialogue from movie "Mr. India", I want to say "Mogambo khush hua" (Mogambo is happy now) I don't know the meaning of it myself. I just made it up on the spot... But I shall try... "Spiritually speaking, I am a lie. Everything is a lie." We are constantly telling lies to ourselves on a daily basis. lol The last sentence I meant that I was thinking of "lies and truth" and you did that post on it. Another "tune in" instance between us. lol

Lying doesn't bother me, but it also depends on what kind of lie. For example, if someone wants to lie to me and say they lost 10 lbs when they really gained 10 lbs, it doesn't matter to me. I figure people need to do what they need to do and only they know their reason for the lie. But I don't like when someone blatantly lies about another person's character just out of their own insecurities, prejudices, or any other reason they feel the need to destroy someone. That's the only kind of lie that I don't like. On another note, I hope you had a nice day today! lol. :)

@pinkCardigangirl I agree. If they are lying about something to do with themselves then that's more understandable. It's because they are embarrassed or ashamed etc. But yeah if they like to lie because it's a fun hobby or want to get people in trouble then that wont fly with me. And thank you so much! Ditto!
