Problem!! Found and Taken Care of

Hello again. I had posted "Problems!!" earlier and had a Chrome issue. Several people responded with ideas. Thank you. What it turned out to be was an infected computer. I called Dell tech support at 9:40a. and just got off the phone at 2:24p. Ugh! 4 hours and 44 minutes. Most of it waiting while the tech cleaned the computer and set up my new System Mechanics Professional anti virus software. What happened is that my daughter was uploading a bunch of games onto her computer and that caused hers to be infected which caused mine to become infected after a while. The Dell people wanted to charge me $230+ for both of our computers to be cleaned and have four incidences for 1 year of warranty. I couldn't afford that so I took the option of $99.95 for the tech to clean my computer today, reset up Chrome and install the new anti-virus that is good for three years. So, I think I got a pretty good deal. I told my daughter she couldn't go on my network and connect to the internet with her laptop. She chooses to download all of these games that are infected even though I have told her the thing to do is use the games on Facebook. She didn't listen so now she has a infected laptop she can't use and that she still owes about $400 on. So sorry Charlie. Listen to mom next time okay?!! Any thoughts?

That is not my idea of cheap, but then again I never use such services. Unless the laptop is very old it should have the feature to reset to factory default, which is always a good solution. It would require starting from scratch and resetting the system as you like it, but it does solve the problem.

Yes, I had thought of that but I wanted to be sure what the problem was and now I am and I have an anti-virus for three years that keep these viruses at bay.

@celticeagle I use Avast free antivirus, which has been adequate for my needs for several years now. Surely a factory reset would be a worthwhile option for your daughter.

@Asylum ...She's done that twice now. I have used Avast. Was using Microsoft Defender on mine and it was doing fine. Was told by a tech it is just as good as most. I have heard Avast is great and why so perhaps after my warranty runs out I will use it again.

AVG has a free virus program that's good you can use too, along with malware bytes. I think you might be able to make it so her pc can use the net but not communicate with your pc. not sure

I have also used it. It was good. No, I have been told that there isn't a way for her to do this. That would be too easy. LOL

@Jessicalynnt ...Yes. I supposed this new anti-virus would take care of it but why? She wouldn't learn anything by that. She needs to take care of this herself.

can it not be cleaned out on her own? $99.95 is still expensive for me though.

oh ok, complete reinstallation always solves my virus problems. though it takes time.. but seems you had a good deal with your anti virus anyway.

@MGjhaud ...I have had the restore thing done in the past but sometimes it doesn't totally take care of the issue. I had to trash one computer due to restore not working and couldn't afford to do the complete cleaning so it ruined my computer totally.

Well, it is cheaper than getting a new computer. I could of just done a restore but have done that in the past and it doesn't do the trick.

Sometimes sharing devices with others may bring about problems in one´s computer. You did right. Now it´s the time for your daughter to get her own antivirus application to protect her own laptop.

I'm glad you got it cleaned up. I'm also glad you were the one who called them instead of them calling you. I'm leery of paying anyone on the other side of the screen for work on my computer. I hope your daughter listens to you and doesn't put anymore infected games on your computer.

Why would they call me? I think my daughter knows now. I am hopeful.

@just4him ...Big companies and organizations don't call or email people like that.

@celticeagle I've had scam calls claiming to be Microsoft and telling me there was something wrong with my computer and I needed to have it fixed and they could fix it for me for such and such dollar amount. It's a scam. The first time they called, I almost bought their package, but my lack of finances was on my side. Then I learned about the scam from someone on Bubblews who posted about it. I have since had that same phone call two more times. The last time not to long ago and just hung up on them as soon as they announced who they were. I've also seen the warning come up on my computer - flashing telling me my computer and everything on it was compromised and I needed to call a number right away. Yeah, I fell for that one the first time too. Not the second or third. If you see it. Close everything down and reboot. It's a scam.

It's rough when our computers and laptops become infected. Very costly. Perhaps adding more protection will help decrease the risks. I hope everything gets resolved.

I don't either. She is out of luck. I hope she pays off the computer.
