My Memento Mori – A Reminder Of Death

This is my only item of bling, or jewellery. It is a Memento Mori – literally ‘A Reminder Of Death’. This was one of a limited edition produced for English Civil War Re-enactors as such reminders of our fleeting morality were common among soldiers serving on both sides. It seems surprising in a time of battle, plague and hunger that men needed such quite morbid mementos but many saw them as a useful inspiration to prayer. I just found my little resin skull on a string (he is barely the size of a fingernail) a fascinating addition to my uniform. Arthur Chappell

@celticeagle not wearing it in the photo - just rested it on a sleeping bag that makes a useful backdrop for photographing small objects for me

I've never heard of these. That's my 'learn something new' for the day.

That's pretty cool. Interesting that they wore them during battle.
