I'm Getting Better At The Haircuts

I have a four year old son who has Autism among other things. He has many sensory issues and also isn't comfortable with new faces. I haven't taken him to a barber because I know he's not going to sit still to get his hair cut. I also know he's not going to be okay with the sound of the clippers. So that's why I cut his hair. I've been doing it for a few years now. I have learned how to do it quickly and cautiously. Today I went shorter than usual, and I think I did a pretty good job. I need to do a touch up above one of his ears, but other than that, he's looking like my handsome little prince. I'm getting better at these haircuts. Before you know it, I'll be running my own backyard salon. lol

Oh your poor little boy. I'm sure he has so many challenges to face in his life. Sure sounds like you're doing a wonderful job of easing him into life by getting out of your comfort zone to help him out. I have such respect for you!

He will also have many special gifts too. My brother is on the autism spectrum and has always had difficulty interacting with people, but he is a brilliant artist, a walking Encylopedia and has a gentle way with people who are marginalized.

@sulynsi A dear friend of mine has a son who is somewhere in the autism spectrum and while he's having his share of problems now, they're working very hard with him and beginning to achieve some amount of success. Your brother sounds amazing!

Hey, that's how you learn. I started grooming dogs to save money and made a business out of it. I don't know about where you are, you may need to be licensed to do 'people hair' but if you have a knack and a unique understanding of children with special needs, you may have something you didn't even realize!

Congratulations for doing your son's own hair cut. Remember "Practice Makes Perfect"

It really does! He moves a lot and tucks his head. He even pushes the scissors away, so it can be challenging, but he's looking mighty handsome today! :)

I am sure it is just easier in the long run to learn to do it yourself. There are many bigger and tougher battles than where to get a hair cut.

i know many places that will work with children with disabilities. I think not allowing him to do those will make it worse later on. An 'ex friend' daughter at autism and now 18 and she can't hold a job, wont do anything because she doesn't feel like it. She blames her disability yet another friend daughter 12 and has it much worse. she worked years with it, and the daughter has progress very nicely.

You should be careful saying things like that, Pink! I will be standing in your yard waiting my turn, otherwise! LOL!
