can family and friends replace each other?

i have seen many people who do not have a family but are happy with the bunch of friends they have got. They see their family in their chosen friends. on the other hand some people choose not to open with with other but only with their family members. for them their family is enough for them. But is it really so? can we totally replace the them with one another?

I don't think I can replace them or switch them. I choose to have both. Although there are times that I spend more time with friends, still I consider my family as someone who will never give up on me.

From personal experience, once we get married our priorities change. We have then limited time for friends as work life and immediate family take up our time and our contacts are tuned to that. For me I spend most time with family post marriage and those before that - siva

I feel both are equally important, friends cannot replace family and vice versa. However, we look upto our family more in terms of crucial decisions in life.
