Friday feels like it never ends

I start my Friday's at 6:30 AM for my daycare kids, then when they all leave I fix dinner. When that is over I get dressed and head out to my overnight caregiver job to spend the evening at an elderly seniors home to keep watch over him in the night.
Get off at 8 AM in the morning, come home, shower and make my one hour trip to Loveland to spend the day with my mom.
Makes for a very long two days and by the time I get back to bed it has been around 39 hours without sleep. It makes for a very long end to my week but I have to say I wouldn't have it any other way.
I love both my jobs but I am ready for a little break.
Do you have nights when you work like this?

@mom210 Kim, if you enjoy taking care of people you would definitely enjoy it. I work for Visiting Angels and all you really need is knowing how to care for elderly with dementia, stroke, etc. I helped take care of my dad when he had Parkinson's, and just personal cases like that. I applied and was interviewed and hired with in a week. They give me as many or few hours as I want. It works very well for me and there are a lot of caregiving companies out there who are always hiring. I was looking for a job and couldn't find one and one day it just popped up on my screen and said they were hiring. Look in job sites under caregivers and you should see a lot in your area.

@JudyEv Yes, I always have to drive on Sat. morning when I get done with my over nighter but I do good with that. I slept like a log last night, went to bed at 9:30 and got up at 9:30 this morning. I never even heard my husband turn off the TV

That must be hard. I've never worked nights like that. My sister-in-law does. She does a similar thing as you. She stays with an elderly couple overnight, and makes sure if anything happens, she's there. She studies and got a nursing assistant certificate, so she knows what to do. Even just working 5 nights a week, she's finding it hard. She usually works from 9 PM to 9 AM.

Not any more but yes, I have been there. Just be sure to take care of yourself or you won't be useful to anyone. We women tend to run ourselves to the ground. !!

I refused to do the overnight jobs, but with my last job I would work sometimes sixty five hours per week. While we still have our parents we do what we can to be with them.

This is true, I will do what is necessary to spend time with my mom and work. She will be released from Rehab on the 19th and will then move with my sister which is 3 hrs from me. I won't be able to spend much time with her then.

Thank you, I think this is what I was meant to do with my life and I enjoy it so guess its better than a 9-5 I would hate going to every day right.

That is a lot of awake time all at once!
I cannot pull all nighter's or alter my sleep times because I have a seizure disorder and it will come into play if I do that. My hubs used to work all 3 shifts, and he could always sleep during the day.
You've got your priorities right spending time with your Mom, its too bad that she wasn't closer.
When you get to bed, I hope that you rest well.

Can't you nap at all during the night if the old people are sleeping? I used to look after a disabled person in her own home for a few nights a week, but I could sleep if she didn't want anything. I had a baby alarm which alerted me.
That's a heck of a long time for you to go without sleep.

This gentleman doesn't sleep, he gets up all night long and comes to sit in the living room and since he is a fall risk I have to stay awake. It is a long time and exhausting after a day with the kids but I don't mind helping the elderly. Its really taking a toll on my body though and I enough of those already. lol

I've done that and am pretty sure I couldn't anymore. Age has a way of doing that to you!! The last time I pulled an allnighter was last fall when my mom in law went into the hospital because she thought she had had a heart attack. I stayed with her overnight and didn't sleep but maybe 20-30 minutes. I found it hard to with the nurses coming in checking on her every little bit. Thankfully she didn't have a heart attack and when we brought her home the next day, I passed out and slept well. Hope you enjoy your visit with your Mom and rest when you get home. Have a blessed day
