Turning to Ubuntu

I have had a difficult few days. One of the PCs decided to lose its mind through some broken Windows and cannot be restored to sanity. We tried. And tried. And trying led to trying times. In the end, the Windows we had wouldn't fit the hardware installed - or vice versa. Not about to buy another computer, nor spend actual money on a new OS. Long story short, I have installed Linux on this hard drive which was the least painful and least expensive way to get back online with an actual keyboard. I don't mind using the tablet for web surfing, games, chat, the occasional myLot comment etc. But I really cannot manage to make myself try to blog on it. I need the feeling of a keyboard beneath my fingers. Nothing is perfect, though. Ubuntu 14.04 won't give me any sound. After following some instructions I found online, I managed to delete an important package with all my computer settings on it, and after finding other instructions, managed to reinstall it. Still have no sound, but at least the installation is whole again. So, anyone out there have any suggestions for me on ways to make myself more comfortable with Linux? I am not feeling quite at home yet. But, at least I am online again.

Ubuntu is an excellent choice, although I am surprised that you installed version 14 because version 16 is the current one. Audio issues with Ubuntu are a thing of the past. Are you missing audio completely or via a specific program?

@Rollo1 Have you checked the sound level in the operating system? If I remember correctly the speaker icon is on the upper toolbar. You should ensure that the volume is turned up. I would also check that the correct speaker output is selected.

@Asylum yes, I checked the settings and tried every possible option in the operating system It's all at 100% and I opened the mixer and unmuted everything even if I don't have it, just in case.

I didn't know there was a version 16. I will have a look at it. I have no audio at all, though it recognizes my speakers and if I push the volume buttons on my speakers, the volume bar on the computer moves too. I wondered if there might be a problem with the sound card. It's a problem, but not the biggest one I have faced in the last few days. The Boy just informed me that version 16 is only for high end computers with good specs. My computer probably doesn't qualify, but I will check it out.

My husband has installed Linux because he had enough of Windows. He has installed "Ubuntu Studio", that is conceived for the multimedia and audio. I am not an expert, but he is, he says that it's easy to configure searching online and installing the packages he needs. I believe that it takes a bit of time, but at least it's free and you can do what you want without being annoyed by Microsoft policies.

I think I have a lot to learn, and I hope that it will eventually all make sense to me. In the meantime, it works, which is more than my Windows was doing. I will look up Ubuntu Studio and see if it has potential for me. Thanks.

@LadyDuck I managed to get flash installed for Firefox but it doesn't work for me in Chromium. No great loss, but here and there you need flash on certain sites. I would love to solve my sound problem. I found a Linux tutorial online and am learning basic commands. It can only help me understand what is going on, but I suspect I won't become an expert.

@Rollo1 If you need help, let me know I can ask to hubby. He switched to Linux because he was upset by Windows 8.1, you cannot control it and Windows 10 is not a solution.

I don't like Windows 10, but you can't get Win 10 if your computer is running XP, so it's not an option anyway.

I'm with you I need to feel the keys beneath my fingers when I am writing papers and blog articles. There is just something about typing. It is kind of calming even when I only had an old electric typewriter.

I need to hear it clacking so I know I hit the keys. The swipe keyboard doesn't work when writing something long and I am no good at dictating with the speech to text. I just like words to come out of my fingers, not my mouth.

@marky7 I buy my computer keyboards based on how much clacking they do. I can't work with soft keys that are all cushiony. I need them to give me positive auditory feedback or I don't know if I hit the key or not.
