Turning to Ubuntu

I have had a difficult few days. One of the PCs decided to lose its mind through some broken Windows and cannot be restored to sanity. We tried. And tried. And trying led to trying times. In the end, the Windows we had wouldn't fit the hardware installed - or vice versa.
Not about to buy another computer, nor spend actual money on a new OS. Long story short, I have installed Linux on this hard drive which was the least painful and least expensive way to get back online with an actual keyboard.
I don't mind using the tablet for web surfing, games, chat, the occasional myLot comment etc. But I really cannot manage to make myself try to blog on it. I need the feeling of a keyboard beneath my fingers.
Nothing is perfect, though. Ubuntu 14.04 won't give me any sound. After following some instructions I found online, I managed to delete an important package with all my computer settings on it, and after finding other instructions, managed to reinstall it. Still have no sound, but at least the installation is whole again.
So, anyone out there have any suggestions for me on ways to make myself more comfortable with Linux? I am not feeling quite at home yet. But, at least I am online again.

@Rollo1 Have you checked the sound level in the operating system?
If I remember correctly the speaker icon is on the upper toolbar. You should ensure that the volume is turned up. I would also check that the correct speaker output is selected.

I didn't know there was a version 16. I will have a look at it. I have no audio at all, though it recognizes my speakers and if I push the volume buttons on my speakers, the volume bar on the computer moves too. I wondered if there might be a problem with the sound card. It's a problem, but not the biggest one I have faced in the last few days. The Boy just informed me that version 16 is only for high end computers with good specs. My computer probably doesn't qualify, but I will check it out.

My husband has installed Linux because he had enough of Windows. He has installed "Ubuntu Studio", that is conceived for the multimedia and audio. I am not an expert, but he is, he says that it's easy to configure searching online and installing the packages he needs. I believe that it takes a bit of time, but at least it's free and you can do what you want without being annoyed by Microsoft policies.

@LadyDuck I managed to get flash installed for Firefox but it doesn't work for me in Chromium. No great loss, but here and there you need flash on certain sites. I would love to solve my sound problem. I found a Linux tutorial online and am learning basic commands. It can only help me understand what is going on, but I suspect I won't become an expert.
