A little bit of luxury

Everyone needs a little treat now and then… my little treat to myself this summer is a garden hammock, one of those with a free-standing support so you don’t have to wait decades to grow two suitably-spaced mature trees. It has two hanging points at either end so no danger it will spin around and tip you out either. Of course I didn’t buy it new, I looked for a suitable second-hand one. This was advertised for £20, but when I arrived to collect it the seller had found it had a small hole so he said I could have it free of charge. He had gone to some trouble to get it to me so in the end we agreed to split the difference and I got it for £10. Then I reinforced the damaged area with an offcut of leather (from my clutter stash!) so now it should last at least for this year. I’m not much of a one for lying around doing nothing but actually a few minutes relaxing in here, watching the birds and enjoying the flowers, is really rather nice. The girls think it’s great fun too. The only one who isn’t keen is my partner; he says it makes him feel seasick. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

My husband bought me one last year. I still keep falling out of it. Would prefer the tree type.

I've actually got a rope hammock which my Mother had; she kept it for decades and never used it due to lack of suitable trees, and now I have it and still can't use it either!

@Fleura I had a fabulous big wood-framed hammock which sadly got recalled as a safety hazard. The metal one hubby bought to replace it just isn't a patch on the old one.

@boiboing my Mother's hammock was created in the days before safety hazards were even thought of!

You should write a follow-up post later in the year and tell us about your experience of falling out or not.

OK! But the shape of it, because it has two hanging points at each end, is really quite flattish so I don't think I will!

The people next door have one of those. The husband seems to use it now and again, and once in a while one of the small boys manages to get into it and can't get out again. In storms, it usually blows to the back of the yard, upside down. I hope you are never lying on it in a storm that blows you upside down.

Thanks, I hope not either! Although we are having a sudden heatwave today so we are probably due a big storm in a day or two!

Yes it was very kind of him to offer it for free but I felt I couldn't accept after he'd gone out of his way to get it to me as well!

This one is actually much more flattish than the traditional style, which makes it easier!

I remember my father before when he was still stronger . He would , after lunch go to the hammock at the backyard and lie on it to read a book . While reading he swing it by pulling the rope tied to another post of the cottage while his other hand has the book . In a little while , he will already be asleep.

I understand how your partner feels, because I cannot stay on a hammock for the same reason.
