HP Mini Best operating System to make it Faster.

Philippines

I've been using this HP mini 210-2100 for a while and the computer is becoming so slow. I try to boot from USB stick with no luck. I read lots of forums but no one can help. I hope there's a person on the site who can help me with the problem.

The first thing that I would do would be to clean and defragment the hard disk. You can do this using the built-in tools in Program Files/Accessories. First run 'Disk Clean-up' and when that has finished, run 'Defragment and Optimise Drives' (Defrag). This will take quite some time, so make sure the machine is connected to the power supply and be patient! Since netbooks don't usually have a great deal of RAM, most of them will use Virtual RAM, which is a section of the hard disk which the computer uses as if it were part of the memory. Since accessing the hard disk is a great deal slower than using solid-state memory, it pays to have enough free space on the hard disk and to have the disk defragmented and optimised. The next thing to do is to make sure that you have nothing loading at start-up which you don't need. Make sure that you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed. If you don't, you can install Kaspersky or Avast, both of which have free versions and both are currently well rated. Be careful when you install them to reject any 'extras' such as making Yahoo your default Search Engine and any other things which you don't want (sometimes these 'extras' are quite sneaky and you may need to uncheck a box or check a box or 'skip' something. Read the screen carefully!) Run a full scan (another hour or so whilst you go and do something else!) and accept all the recommendations to remove or clean up any malware or viruses the program finds. If the machine came with Windows 7, it is very likely that you are being offered the upgrade to Win 10. This typically downloads in the background even before you accept it and on a slow Internet connection may take several hours before it downloads successfully. That has been the cause of many people reporting slow machines. There are ways of preventing this but they are not obvious or straightforward. @DaddyEvil recently posted a discussion on how to do this which you may find useful.

Thank you for the interesting reply friend. Yes, that is something that I always do and I have a uninstalled all of the software that I'm not using that much. I just rely on my desktop when I need a big computing task like recording music and all that kind of stuff. Posting replies on the site will be most of the task that I'm doing on the netbook. Just recovered a lot of disk spaces uninstalling all the unnecessary stuff. Just the browser and music player are the important stuff that's still in the machine. I think I'll try windows 10 in the end of life for windows 7. :) I'll check that post and hopefully I can come up with new useful ideas.

@metastasis69 If you can install Win 10, well and good! Many people have said that it runs a little faster than Win 7 (on the same machine) but I haven't had a chance to test it. I have a netbook running Win 7 and there seems to be no reason why it shouldn't run Win 10 but I have so far been unsuccessful in installing it, in spite of following many recommendations. I am now considering installing a version of Linux which will give me everything I need to do on it with far less RAM usage (and I can recover the 2 GB of 'reserved' disk partition which the Restore to Factory Settings/Windows Reinstall feature uses). If all you need to do is browse the Internet, access emails and play music, with, maybe some Office functions, then Linux may be all you need. If you use programs which are specific to Windows, you may be better off sticking with Windows (though there are emulators for Linux). I haven't yet decided which version of Linux I would use, should I choose to go that route, but Ubuntu is a well-known and recommended distro and there are smaller distros, too, which are designed for smaller, older machines.

Hello! I have a few questions for you and a couple of suggestions, as well. (I have also never spoken to you before, according to my pc, so it is a pleasure to meet you!) What is your O/S? What is your RAM? Do you use any type of booster for your system? How often do you clean it and how do you clean your pc? I have been using my Acer NetBook for over eight years. It still runs like a new machine. Mine has 1 GB of RAM and 160 GB hard drive. I have all kinds of programs running on my system, so it did slow down a bit, but I fixed that by adding a flash drive (64 GB) and dedicating it to ReadyBoost. (Right now, ReadyBoost is showing it is using 30 GB of that flash drive to help my system run faster/better.) I also use Avast Antivirus software on my NetBook as well as Advanced SystemCare 9 Free. ASC9 Free runs in the background whenever my NetBook is idle and cleans my hard drive, defragments my system, optimizes the system, cleans my registry, deletes malware and is configured for machines running anything from Win Vista up to the latest update for Win10. I have used Advanced SystemCare on my NetBook since day 1 of having it. @Owlwings has given you excellent advice. If you have qualms about using automated software running on your system, then I would strongly urge you to follow the advice Owl gave you, If automation doesn't bother you, then look at the program I am talking about. You might like it! Here is the link to it: Good luck, whichever you choose!

This is one of a good advice. I'm using atom 1.2 quadcore and 2 g ram. I'm also using a 350 gb hard disk. For now, I quit using windows and use LINUX on the machine and it's running so fast. It's better than the windows 7 installed with all the tweaks to make the system lighter. But anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Our internet is very slow this past few days until today. Maybe this was because of the elections.

I think all the time the internet here in the Philippines is really bad. I hope this will be the next project for the coming administration. I hope there will be other choices soon.

Sorry, I can't help! I no longer use computers since the birth of smartphones.

No worries, I think these machines are becoming obsolete soon but I have big fingers so it's more comfortable for me to use my laptop and desktop and stay away from my tab whenever possible.

@metastasis69 I prefer desktop but internet signal is weak inside our house so I just use smartphones and surf the net outdoors
