Huge Bill To Pay For Wasted Water

I was expecting a much higher water bill because of the continuous leak between the bathroom and the outside sink, but I was shocked at how huge it was - from 3 digits to 5 digits! Our water consumption in cubic meters increased from 2 to 3 digits.
In fact, at the bottom of the bill there was an advisory from the water company to check our plumbing and waterline. You'd think we had a swimming pool here.
The leak, as well as the dripping shower, has been fixed, so I hope the water bill will be much lower next month. I will also be emailing my siblings about this later.
Have you had to pay a huge utility bill (like water, electricity, gas, etc.) because of an undetected problem?

@AkoPinay do deep wells never run out of water? do you have to boil or filter them?

@toniganzon do you notice any increases/decreases in your utility bills?

i don't know why, but i have a feeling the water bill will still be big next month. the period covered don't seem to match the dates when the leaks were fixed.

@sol_cee you can see the period covered in the present and past bills and i marked on the calendar when we discovered the leak, when we started switching off the gate valve and when the leaks were fixed. i hope i'm wrong and worrying for nothing.

@hereandthere Yes, turning off the water is definitely the right way.
I think you might as well get the maintenance guy to look through the whole house for any potential leak, as in any rusting pipes that need replacement.

it took a while to notice and confirm the leak (more like flow!), and the plumber was still finishing a job elsewhere so we turned off the water at night for the meantime. yes, the bill was that big!

it really hurts the pocket and i honestly resent having to pay it, but what can we do? it took a while to notice it and fix it. hopefully, it never happens to you.

can you drink the well water directly or do you have to boil or filter or treat it first?

@hereandthere We run it through a filter first, but it is fine to just drink as well.

@ida123 is it true that when the electricity comes back but there is no water, the pump will be affected?

your water and electricity are connected to each other, right? so that means you have to always check the pump.

Yes, we had a leak in the hot water line, AND in the hot water heater, so our water bill AND our electric bill were higher. UGH!

@hereandthere AC is also switched to fan in the morning, and the thermostat is 25 degrees only. I cannot endure extreme heat, my friend. I might collapse because I have diabetes.

Yes, I have experienced that in my house in the Philippines. There was a leakage we didn't know until the next day when we woke up. We thought the sounds of water was only rain because it was middle of the night but it was the outside faucet.

that's what i thought, too. that someone was using the faucet.
were you able to fix the leaking faucet the next day? did you get a bigger water bill?

The water company once dug up a pipe near my home and flooded my yard. Then they turned around and tried to bill me $300 for it. I got that straightened out.

Oh no! Well it's good it has been fixed - nobody wants a higher than necessary utility bill! We thankfully have never had that problem, but my parents did. Their water bill was unusually high. My parents are so stubborn to not hire any professional help as much as possible, so my dad actually spent days trying to figure out where the leak was. And he actually found it and fixed it himself. That was a few years ago though. Now with our drought, we would probably get penalized for "using" so much water!

yeah, i remember you're not even allowed to collect rainwater there.
i'm glad your dad was able to find and fix it.
good thing the plumber was still living nearby and made sure it was fixed within the day.

yes, but thought it was just someone using the sink outside the kitchen. when it was confirmed, we turned off the water every night until the plumber was available to fix it.
