In July of 2013 the Higgs Boson was finally discovered by physicists. Peter Higgs put the idea of a God Particle to other physicists way back in 1964 and physicists have been searching for it ever since. Physicists world wide rejoiced on this day.
Two experiments were instrumental in finding and confirming the results. CMS and ATLAS. Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia Illinois and CERN the European Organization for Nuclear Research.on the Swiss French border were both hugely involved in the experiments to find the HIggs Boson.
My son was attending Purdue University Calumet Campus and worked on the CMS Compact Muon Solenoid experiment for both Fermi and Cern. He was sent results of the experiments in graph form and was responsible for checking for anomalies. He was sent these graphs online and often had to get up early in the mornings for video conferences with the physicists in France. On some occasions he had to give a report on his findings. It always made him nervous when he had to do this.
It was a momentous day in the world of physics and a news conference was held at Purdue University that day. My son informed me of this and I was the only parent at the news conference and my son reported his role in the discovery. He tells me it was a very small part, as thousands of people were involved in it. But this mom was very proud of her son. To be involved in something that has been searched for for decades and was so very important was amazing for my son and this proud mom. The team from Purdue University was on the news for several days and made the papers in the area as well. I have the video of the news and numerous copies of those newspapers.
My son has since gotten his Bachelors Degree in Physics from Purdue University and just got his Master's Degree in Astrophysics, from Michigan State University where he will continue on to get his PhD.
The picture I have here is of my son on the day the Higgs Boson was discovered at the news conference at Purdue giving his report. I don't know a darn thing about physics so please if I have gotten something wrong chalk it up to my complete ignorance of the world of physics.

@BirdSongs Oh ok I see. Yes some of my text is hard for me to understand as it's about physics something I know nothing about.

What an honor. Contrats and something to be proud of. I wonder why he is nervous? I was never great with public speaking but can get by if I have to. The only thing I could add was that Peter Higgs was upset when the media began calling the bosom particle the God particle.

@fishtiger58 Something tells me he is anything but stupid. These modern studies and concepts are extremely difficult to understand even just to get the basic idea. News wow that can be intimating.

I think he didn't want to look stupid but he did a great job with the news conference.

@Bluedoll He is actually very good at public speaking but he is a bit unnerved by it. He has taught a physics class at Purdue and at Michigan State and always received high marks from his professors for it. So I think his nerves are unfounded.

@LadyDuck Thanks I am. Once he has kids of his own he will better understand my bragging.

@fishtiger58 As much as that is a great option, I really hope not. I hope he's putting it to good use in the physics field and helping with research. He would be well qualified with the great credentials he already has. In my humble opinion teaching would be a waste of his talents. He should keep it as an alternative for his later years.

Thanks Valerie, he does have options once he gets his PhD. Not sure what he will be doing in a few years. Possibly teaching university

@just4him Many of the physics professors do both. They teach a class or two and do research at the university as well. He really wants to do research so once he gets the PhD we shall see what comes up for him.

You don't need to know physics to be a proud momma! Thanks for the update about the God Particle. It is interesting.

Thanks Marilyn, he hates when I brag but I don't care it's what mom's do. We brag on our kids and we earned the right to do so. Once he has kids he will understand. His future is his, I hope for everything for him.
