Is it possible to love a girl from another country and culture ?

I am asking this question on behalf of my friend who is not a member of my lot. is it possible to love a girl from another country, culture, and different life style. both are frequently talking to each other at social networking sites even they have exchanges their number. talking face to face on skype and other apps also since 6 months. I have also talked with that girl and i find she is pretty and very much serious about him. they talk like they knows each other from years. i am sure both are bonded very well but the question is what is the end of the relationship if they both can't meet each other. I heard that long distance relationships never works ! Is they are wasting their time on such thing that never gonna happen or a some kind of love that i can't understand.
