I am not sure about why did this happened but in the Netherlands there is a controversy because some Psychologist decided that 20 year old young woman who was a rape victim cannot be cured from her depression and the only way for her to ease the pain is to under go mercy killing or euthanasia. I understand euthanasia if it's a sickness like bone cancer which is very painful or any painful disease that slowly kills you but depression can be solved by the right therapy.
The girl got raped when she was on her early teens and it made her depressed and anorexic. I really don't know why it is the only solution the doctors see. She already got killed via Lethal injection. I don't know but I believe she can still be saved.Had she found the right doctors.
Oprah Winfrey is a Rape victim and she is a highly respected billionaire and tv personality. So it proves there is hope for rape victims if they have the right support system.
A victim of sexual assault in The Netherlands, told doctors that her emotional pain was too much for her to bear. The doctors allowed her to be euthanized, b...

Why would physicians decided to give up on her? She still have hopes. On the right teraphy and the right environment. Probably she will be healed. And I believe she could start believing to live again if she would k n ow that whoever did that to her had been serving their punishment.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Each individual is unique. We could not say that what works for the other may also work for her. Their are just some that doesn't. She maybe a special case. But I believe ones her needs a are meet and her fears be ease and she would slowly get back the trust for herself maybe she would find her new hope of living life again.

I know, there are so many rape victims and domestic abuse victims who became inspiration successful people in life. She should have proven in the end that she win and the rapist will lose. Why did she end up with these doctors.

@jndlponti I think her family should have tried to find different doctors who could have helped her to recover.

There are people who experienced worst things than her like surviving a war or a massacre and many of those people managed to recover. The doctors go a lot of criticisms for giving up on her.

Doctors that give up on treating their patients shouldnt even be doctors. There should always be a way to try and help someone with depression.
Like you said a deadly disease would justify, especially if it gives a great deal of pain, but mental illness is treatable.
These doctors should lose their licenses.

@Absinto If I am dutch, I may rather get treated on a 3rd world country. Not only it's cheaper, medical tourism is awesome and I know doctors wont euthanize me.

People do not react to rape in the same way. I know a young woman who never recovered, she is in a sort of "vegetative" states. As a matter of fact she does not even know that she is alive. All that said, I think that we cannot decide if put term to a life for something like this.

When you say vegetative, Are you talking about comatose? Or is she similar to the girl from this news? The girl from the news is said to have healthy body when the doctor decided to euthanize her.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Not comatose, vegetative. A vegetative tive state is absence of responsiveness and awareness due to overwhelming dysfunction of the cerebral hemisphere.

I've never heard of that one before. I don't believe depression is a good enough reason to use that method either. I'm surprised the girls parents went along with it unless the girl was of age and didn't ask or tell any of her family or friends of this radical decision.
Everybody's genetics is different and just because many others have gone through similar situations and come out on top doesn't mean that everyone will, but just the same it's ridiculous that this method was deemed necessary.

It must be her own decision. I think if parents got involved they might try to stop it. I still feel disturbed doctors will suggest something like this instead of trying to find her a good support system. I dont think this will be allowed in the US.
People with good health had been euthanize in the Netherlands and I find it disturbing.

I have read about this case. I realise that the experience has been really painful for her, and I have personal experience with depressions, but I still don't understand that they chose to euthanize her. She was only 20 years old, and I think there were still treatment options left. People are different, and two people who experience the same thing don't react the same way, but I think that it is wrong to give up on someone who is 20 years old.

I heard that in the Netherlands, Doctors can Euthanize patients without their permissions or family's permissions. Her family should have tried other options. There are many doctors out there who can handle patients like her.

There is also a case of twin brothers who got euthanized after finding out they will go blind. their families and doctor didn't seem to even bother to tell them there is life after blindness.

Honestly? You want us to judge all rape victims by the standard of Oprah? Come on...

I dont judge her, I judge the doctors for failing, she is only 20, there is so much potential they can save her but they chose to kill her. I had seen cases worst than hers but the social workers and psychologist gave the victim the support system to save the victim. these doctors gave up on her and thinks killing her is the only way. if she really wanted to die, she would have done it on her own. It is the doctors treating her who thinks she is hopeless case. Her family didnt even bother trying other therapist to help her.
Most American psychologist actually criticized the Dutch doctors. They think she can be saved.
